Nick and Nora Go To Mars
Revisado: 02-01-23
This book combines the genres of Locked Door Mystery and Space Opera(?) Science Fiction Romance(?) And, perhaps, a drop of hard science fiction. Combine, stir 40 times clockwise followed by 10 addional stirs widdershins. Pour over ice, invoke the names Becky Chambers, Nathan Lowell, Douglas Adam's, and John Scalzi and reverently drink to the lives of our Science Fiction overlords and octopedal robots everywhere. You will be giving thanks to the absolutely brilliant Mary Robinette Kowal for perhaps the most inventive book ever written. You helped me survive an iffy stay at the hospital with grace and dignity. I will be back, Mary, to read your next masterpiece.
I digress. To have Mary read her own work to us? We are transcendent!

Historia
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think. We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife.

One of the loveliest books I have listened to.
Revisado: 11-15-22
Sarah Page has written this novelette with unparalleled skill! Be ready for laughter, sadness, the indomitable strength of the human spirit, and the joy of forgiveness,
The actors playing the various parts were so talented that it became easy to become lost in the narrative, the sign of the best books. I will be looking for both more of Ms. Page's work but also for the style of the narration. You felt like you were at a play where you could not see but could still see the pictures in your head. I am totally satisfied with this purchase!

Historia
After suffering a personal tragedy Abby Sullivan buys a huge old seaside mansion she has never even seen, packs up her life in San Francisco, and moves to Holiday Bay Maine, where she is adopted, quite against her will, by a huge Maine Coon Cat named Rufus, a drifter with her own tragic past named Georgia, and a giant dog with an inferiority complex named Ramos. What Abby thought she needed was alone time to heal. What she ended up with was, an inn she never knew she wanted, a cat she couldn't seem to convince to leave, and a new family she'd never be able to live without.

Horrible narration destroys the entire book.
Revisado: 10-08-22
What may be a good book is totally destroyed by the narrator. I have no idea why they would hire such a horrible narrator for what seems to be a decent book, did they not listen to it before putting is on the market? Angel should find a totally different profession and should pay back whatever she was paid so a better narrator can be hired. As it is, I quit after one grueling chapter.

Pleasant Surprise
Revisado: 09-05-22
This book was a pleasant surprise because the free books can be subpar. Nice world building, snarky (but not too) humor and great storyline. And the narration! Candace Thaxton is a gem! I'll need to search for other titles she has narrated because actors of her caliber usually pick great books to narrate; that's worked for me in the past. Highly recommended!

Always satisfying
Revisado: 09-04-22
I found D E Stevenson when I was in my late teens and fell immediately in love. Of course, some of the attitudes make us cringe in these days but one keeps in mind that Ms. Stevenson meant no harm but was a product of the times. The characters are beautifully drawn with all their petty foibles, both good and bad. I always wanted to be a good person and admired the high moral standards of the characters. This impacted on my teenage self and I never, ever got into any trouble. Now, 46 years later, these books never fail to make me happy. D E Stevenson is timeless. I will love her books until the day I die!

A Huge Cornucopia of Goodness
Revisado: 02-07-22
I listened to this audiobook straight through because it was too good to stop. That meant staying up all night but this book is worth more than one night of lost sleep! If you love fantasy, if you love science fiction, if you love coming of age stories, if you embrace the struggles of LGBTQ characters whose real world counterparts deserve our understanding and support, if you love holograms finding their humanity and young people finding their callings in life, then this book is for you. One listen was not enough for me and, after digesting what I heard, I will be listening to it again. Thank you Ryka Aoki for your vision and thank you Cindy Kay for your performance!

Perfection, as usual
Revisado: 12-05-21
The first time I read the Outlander series was just prior to the publication of "A Breath of Snow and Ashes. When I finished "The Fiery Cross", I did something I had never done before, I proceeded to read them all again, finishing "Cross" just in time to read "Breath" for the first (but not the last) time. During that period, I spent my nights dreaming about Claire and Jamie and my days daydreaming about them. If I was ever stranded on a deserted island, I would want these books to be the only thing I brought with me. I have since read them all a third time. It took Diana 7 long years to publish "Bees" and I pray to God it doesn't take her as long to write the next, I'm getting too old and I will be forced to come back as a ghost should I die before it is published! Thank you, Diana, for hours and years of enjoyment!

Pretty good
Revisado: 11-07-21
I enjoyed this book for the most part and would recommend it to anyone except for a select few. The author tells us that the girl's aunt died of ovarian cancer, I have ovarian cancer. I would rather that the author say simply "cancer" instead of the specific type of cancer as a lot of cancers can now be treated as chronic diseases rather than death sentences. Those of us with life-threatening illnesses don't enjoy having our diseases used as plot points and tripping over them without warning.

After the Final War, after the appearance of the Bug aliens and their enforced peace, Shining Smith is still alive, still doing business from the old scrapyard bequeathed to her by her father. But Shining is now something more than human. And the scrapyard is no longer just a scrapyard, but a place full of secrets. This life she has built, while empty, is predictable and safe. Until the only friend left from her previous life shows up, dead, in the back of a scrapped Tesla warplane. Clutched in her cold fingers is a note to Shining - warning her of a coming attack.

Faith Hunter never fails to deliver
Revisado: 10-31-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this first book of a new series by Faith Hunter and plan on listening to the next installment as soon as I finish this review. I seldom write reviews because my time is limited but I make exceptions for those books that are as good as this. I look forward to further exploring this post apocalyptic world and recommend it highly to everyone. The world building is impeccable, the characters three dimensional. The narrator, Kristine Hvam, does a truly professional job bringing this book to life. I often search for audiobooks based on the narrator and Khristine will be one for whom I search...as well as anything and everything written by Faith Hunter!

Unparalleled
Revisado: 09-05-21
These books are some of the best in the genre. Not only are the writing, characters, and storyline perfection itself but the choice of Amanda Ronconi as narrator is really the only possible choice. She is the best narrator in the biz, making it difficult for anyone else to compete with her skilled performances. This is the second time that I have listened to these books and it will, most certainly, not be the last.
