Great concept and religion takes a less prominent seat in most chapters
Revisado: 03-31-25
As an agnostic feminist one of the chapters made me gag a bit. The other chapters more than made up for it though. Great concept, easily applied, very useful in all sorts of relationships. Not my favorite narrating accent but that’s personal preference. By the end of the book I got used to it.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Enjoyable. Sleepy readers voice worked as a goodnight storybook
Revisado: 12-26-22
Good book, I liked it. Listening to wind down at night so the sleepy reader worked, otherwise not thrilled by the monotone. Great story overall. If unfamiliar with chess the positions mean almost nothing and are not explained. The psychology of it made up for it though. And I now want to learn to play chess even more, so I can appreciate it more on 2nd read!

Wanted to like but not even useful to fall asleep.
Revisado: 08-11-22
Not my cup of tea. Loved braiding sweetgrass. entangled life. Hoped for similar engaging yet still bedtime story type mayerial but no such luck. Maybe the tone of voice which I disliked messed it up for me, not sure why I dislike it so much but I do.
I particularly resent that on top of it, it seems audible now makes it more difficult to return titles where you tried out a new author but it didnt work out. Gotta be more careful next time.

Enjoyable, despite narrator's almost-screeching
Revisado: 06-05-22
A fine book throughout. Didnt mind the accents that were criticized by some. Wish the volume was more even, it made listening annoyingly painful at times where the narrator kept exclaiming a bit too loudly. Not great for those with more sensitive ears lol.

Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Get the women back into history. Good read.
Revisado: 04-25-22
Liked it a lot, but less so than The secret life of bees. Maybe due to the switching between two narrators, not sure. The switching perspectives made it unique though, in a different way. Great story and very enjoyable read regardless, this is very very good. Also loved to read about the important role the Grimke sisters played in the abolitionist movement and history. Pity we dont learn about them more prominently in "regular history".

Darkness with a glaze of honey. Voice A+++ :)
Revisado: 04-17-22
Loved it, fully my cup of tea. Hoped for something like "Where the Crawdads sing" and wasnt disappointed. Main shared feature is that it is so unique. Many likeable characters and plenty honey bees. Fully fleshed characters. Most baddies have their reasons, even if just ignorance or their own hurts. A book written with love and a ton of wisdom about human souls that shines through every sentence. The narrator's voice and intonation was So. Good. I liked her voice so much, I want to hug Jenna Lamia. I already want to listen again and sofar I havent listened to anything twice, nor wanted to, with one exception. Gotta go now, and look if Jenna Lamia narrated anything else ;).

We need more scientists like her ...
Revisado: 04-03-22
.... who put her schience into a broader cultural and social context and help to start a dialog about new ways to look at us and our world, moving us towards solutions, rather than pick and choose from the assorted old myths. Science is supposed to continuously ask questions, not present final answers that close the subject. Our knowledge is constantly evolving which requires constant re-evaluation of the old and integration with the new. Yet scientific theories are still so slow to change. So this book was very refreshing. More of this!!!

Painted with a soft warm detailed brush
Revisado: 03-15-22
Captivating and engaging, a uniquely different kind of pageturner. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of art. Great storytelling by both author and narrator. Characters I could relate to easily, despite their flaws, some significant, all painted with some degree of compassion. A book of greys, not blacks and whites, of dusk, shadows, sunrises and sunsets, and a full color spectrum. And a non-jaded look at the underlying biology of human, and not so human, creatures of this earth. The Marsh ecology came to life in the human sphere. My top three book list changed just now.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.
