Historia
The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the words "I was told that my father was killed in the war." A dock worker in Bristol, Harry never knew his father, but he learns about life on the docks from his uncle, who expects Harry to join him at the shipyard once he's left school. But then an unexpected gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys' school, and his life will never be the same again. As he enters into adulthood, Harry finally learns how his father really died, but the awful truth only leads him to question, was he even his father?

Great story, the author pulls off the multiple perspective writing very well. Was recommended the book by a friend and was not disappointed, very well worth a credit.

Great prequel story explaining the background history of the other books.
Revisado: 04-11-24
Perhaps I was a little dissatisfied with the ending because I thought that Fish was the main character, but as we spent more and more time with Mara, I realized that she was a kind of “sleeper main character”. Loved the frog to princess ending and Nick Cole really made the corporate manager hatable with the blatant ableism. VA was good as per usual. Overall though it was worth a credit to listen and enjoy.

Great twists and narration come together to make another enjoyable read
Revisado: 03-21-24
As said by other “readers”, Nick and Eric have done it again with very coherent writing despite jumping between IRL, the game, and the dream. You always know where the character is unless you’re not supposed to (meaning the main character doesn’t know either). Lots of little details and colorful descriptions really brought me into the world of the book, and I felt drawn into the beauty and the horror of the moments. Definitely didn’t expect the twists even when I tried to guess how the story was going to turn out. Hopefully there’s a sequel coming for the series.

While some of the twists were a little predictable, I still got that same giddy feeling from listening to the main protagonist fighting their way through a fallen dystopia. Can’t wait to start the second book!

Great Twist on a Pirate Romance Novel
Revisado: 03-20-23
Originally read this in high school and recently wanted to listen to it again while at work. The narration is great and flows smoothly 99% of the time between characters in conversation. Happy to spend a credit to enjoy one of my favorite high school books.

Everything and a Spare Mag Too
Revisado: 03-09-23
When I was recommended this book by some friends, I didn’t think it would be just this good. The writing is such a perfect mix of wartime surrealism, dark humor, and small-galactic tragedy, that I couldn’t stop listening, and I knew only a veteran could be the author. My only complaint is that it wasn’t longer, but that’s what the sequel book(s?) are for, right? If you love science fiction and campy cultural references this book is what you’ll want to spend your monthly audiobook credit on. I’m definitely buying the paperback for my own modest book collection. I gave the performance 4.5/5 but that’s just because the performer would mispronounce certain words, but otherwise they did great at differentiating characters using accents and mannerisms throughout.

Historia
The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct and the half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind, but the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory. Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on Earth....

A must read for science fantasy fans
Revisado: 07-22-18
As a fan of the games I was curious as to what could have inspired a game series as good as the Metro games. To say the least i enjoyed the book very much and was amazed that it was written by Dmitry when he was only 18. The characters are compelling and the narrator does very well in pronouncing 99.9% of the words which I would struggle with only reading. My only complaint is that they didn’t choose an actual Russian English speaker to narrate but that’s minor compared to the skill of the one they used.
