Fun fantasy world, but with transparent plot

The worlbuilding and magic was engaging, and I liked the main characters so it was engaging to follow the flow of the characters and see the MC grow, but the plot didn't hold any major surprises. I don't usually try to guess the end front the beginning, but I was able to peg the majority of the broad points for the end of book one by chapter 2 or 3 and see through a couple plot twists. Still in the middle of book two, which so far isn't as transparent, but If this wasn't already an omnibus I probably wouldn't have continued the series.

I think the main reason is that the main character was suspicious of the main antagonist organization right from the start rather than starting from a place of trust or even ambivalence.

Why haven't I heard about this before?

I was hooked from the prologue. I have to find out how that scene came about. The story captivated me throughout, engaging characters, believable world, and a fascinating concept. I see a trilogy released but not sure if just 2 more books can lead up to the promise in that prologue. Hopefully the wait between installments isn't too long.

Narrator did phenomenal too. Every character sounded distinct and tone was a good match and I didn't want to stop listening.

Slight complaint is that for an obviously non earth world, using proper names from Greek mythology and wholesale transplantation of the Norse afterlife, Valkyries and all, it's so out of place. It does relieve a little need for exposition using familiar names, but it came off as lazy world building in an world that otherwise felt nicely fleshed out.

Living in Japanese Legends

A very enjoyable way to experience Japanese history and myths. this book is a mix of a Japanese myth and legend anthology and Sherlock Holmes detective stories.

Mixed feelings

the writing and narration were both very well done. My mixed feelings come from the structure of the magic system, which was based on the Priesthood Power of God. i felt stuck in a strange dichotomy that kept pulling me out of the story. there were sections of the magic that i thought were too sacred and should have been changed to something made up and there were some sections that had been changed to something made up and i felt it should have been left the same because it felt wrong to have changed it. then I would chide myself and say "you can't have it both ways".

I wish i could give it a higher rating. I will probably try something in a different universe from this author, but i don't think i will continue in the Muirwood series.

got this book because I love Tim Reynolds and it had good reviews. didn't know that that I would end up loving it. I was very disappointed when I couldn't find book 2 waiting for purchase immediately :-D

Exceeds Expectations

So I picked this book almost randomly from a $4.95 sale thinking it would be as quick fantasy troupe. I was blown away by this book. No mere troupe, that is for sure. Sullivan mastered the art of manipulating readers into believing the wrong conclusions that kept me guessing where the conspiracy was turning.

Sullivan envisioned great characters for his books. I loved the witting byplay between the thieves, and Harian's "annoying" need to do good deeds that gets them deeper and deeper into the conspiracy. I loved watching the prince transform out of a petulant boy into a leader.

You can count on the next two books I buy being books 2 and 3 of the Riyria Revelations.

Amazing Story, Amazing Narration

Great continuation of Kvoth's story. Unbelievably believable narration. wholehearted recommendation except for the slight spoiler below


I did not enjoy Kvoth's time in the Fae, mostly because his companion was the Fae Queen of Cavorting. I know a lot of young men think about sex a lot, but I don't like my books to dwell on it so much.
