Lifestyle journalist Katrine escaped past traumas by moving to a coast renowned for seaside holidays and natural beauty. But when a vast hoard of human remains and prehistoric artifacts is discovered in nearby Brickburgh, a hideous shadow engulfs her life. Helene, a disillusioned lone parent, lost her brother, Lincoln, six years ago. Disturbing subterranean noises he recorded prior to vanishing, draw her to Brickburgh's caves. A site where early humans butchered each other across 60,000 years. Upon the walls, images of their nameless gods remain.

Creative Ideas Poorly Executed
Revisado: 07-03-24
The narration of this audio book was flat and full of mispronounced words. Was there an editor? The story itself was promising - but the characters were not interesting at all.

Historia
In a cottage overlooking the windswept Maine coast, Wilder Harlow has begun the last book he will ever write. It is the story about the sun-drenched summer days of his youth in Whistler Bay, and the blood-stained path of the killer that stalked his small vacation town. About the terrible secret he and his companions, Nat and Harper, discovered entombed in the coves off the bay. And how the pact they swore that day echoed down the decades, forever shaping their lives.

Good Start & Confused End
Revisado: 06-21-24
I thought that the first part of this book was interesting. The second half was completely confusing. It is fine to have a twist ending, but 7 twist endings in one book just doesn't work. It is like Marvel relying so hard on the multiverse, there are no emotional stakes.

Historia
In the North of England, far from the intrusions of cities but not far from civilization, Silvie and her family are living as if they are ancient Britons, surviving by the tools and knowledge of the Iron Age. For two weeks, the length of her father’s vacation, they join an anthropology course set to reenact life in simpler times. The ancient Britons built ghost walls to ward off enemy invaders, rude barricades of stakes topped with ancestral skulls. When the group builds one of its own, they find a spiritual connection to the past. What comes next but human sacrifice?

A Little Jewel of Folk Horror
Revisado: 06-21-24
This short book is so well written! I felt like I was seeing the story unfold before my eyes. I really look forward to more from this writer. The narrator was perfect for this book.

True Horror
Revisado: 06-21-24
This book is beautifully written and really, really unsettling. This protagonist is a very damaged young woman. I found myself repulsed by her behavior but I also felt very sorry for her. There is animal cruelty in this book which is awful, but it an important element in the plot. I will not forget this book any time soon.

Historia
The worst thing possible has happened. Richard and Juliette Willoughby's son, Ewan, has died suddenly at the age of five. Starve Acre, their house by the moors, was to be full of life, but is now a haunted place. Convinced Ewan still lives there in some form, Juliette seeks the help of the Beacons, a seemingly benevolent group of occultists. Richard, to try and keep the boy out of his mind, has turned his attention to the field opposite the house, where he patiently digs the barren dirt in search of a legendary oak tree.

Beautiful Language, Haunting Story
Revisado: 06-21-24
Starve Acre is a hypnotic story of a family dealing with tragedy. It is trance-like and disturbing. Both the author and the narrator do an amazing job bring this unusual story to life.

Not for me
Revisado: 09-13-22
I love the podcast Morbid, but struggled with this book. I tapped out on the deer scene - too graphic a description of animal suffering for me.
