Historia
It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War. The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare.

Gilbert is among the best story tellers because he uses personal letters mixed with a timeline of events to create a cohesive description of the great breadth of WW1. Well done! I recommend increasing the narration speed for a better listening experience

Quit while you're ahead
Revisado: 03-28-24
The author did a great job getting into the kind of detail I like regarding the life and empire of Genghis Khan. Several times especially towards the end, The author falls into the trap of seeing the past through today's lens. He tries just a little too hard to create parallels between the story, women's rights, western supremacy and all the jingoistic, trendy themes most hard-core history buffs really don't want to hear

Historia
Pax Romana examines how the Romans came to control so much of the world and asks whether traditionally favorable images of the Roman peace are true. Goldsworthy vividly recounts the rebellions of the conquered and examines why they broke out, why most failed, and how they became exceedingly rare. He reveals that hostility was just one reaction to the arrival of Rome and that from the outset, conquered peoples collaborated, formed alliances, and joined invaders, causing resistance movements to fade away.

Against the background of an age that saw the rebirth of ancient and classical learning, Paul Strathern explores the intensely dramatic rise and fall of the Medici family in Florence as well as the Italian Renaissance, which they did so much to sponsor and encourage. Interwoven into the narrative are the lives of many of the great Renaissance artists with whom the Medici had dealings, including Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Donatello as well as scientists like Galileo and Pico della Mirandola.

Historia
Through historical newspaper accounts and the personal letters of soldiers, the events leading up to the battle and the battle itself are stunningly recreated. You will enter the mind of Robert E. Lee as he makes the fateful decision to cross the Potomac River and take the offensive. You will feel the frustration of Abraham Lincoln as he struggles to convince George McClellan to fight. And you will stand side-by-side with foot soldiers as the peaceful Maryland countryside explodes.

Detailed political analysis of Antietam and result
Revisado: 02-16-24
Another great book for history nerds... and I mean nerds! McPherson analyses the tactical and strategic decisions made by McClellan, Lincoln and many other Leaders within both international and domestic contexts. I appreciate this book because of the detail. Other, very worthy books cover Antietam as part of the overall Civil War but this book is a microscope focused only on that trajectory inflecting battle. Note: for anyone wishing to add to the reasons to despise Gen McClellan, this book is for you. "Little Napoleon" was at best an egotistic bumbler; at worst, a Confederate sympathizer.

First published in 1875, General William T. Sherman's memoir was one of the first from the Civil War and was offered to the public because, as Sherman wrote in his dedication, "no satisfactory history" of the war was yet available. Although Memoirs has been revised and corrected many times over the years, Sherman famously never changed the original text of his recollections.

Historia
John Gregory Bourke served General George Crook for 15 years and was his right-hand man. This work is an account of his time with the legendary US Army officer in the post-Civil War West. On the Border with Crook is a written recollection of Crook’s campaigns during the American Indian Wars. Bourke makes the American frontier come alive with his description. He also included descriptions not only of Crook and his fellow cavalrymen, but also of legendary Native American leaders. Bourke argues that Crook etched his name into the annals of American history.

This historical document needs to be understood through the lens of the last half of the 1800s.
There is much to learn about native American history, American, military, history, serious, American governmental mistakes that reflect today’s times, and it is a story of leadership Profound examples of leadership are described among both the native Americans and the European Americans.
Written by a military professional associated with general crook, and the American West throughout his career, the prose is concise but visually descriptive and historically important

The Age of Napoleon, the 11th and final volume of the Story of Civilization, surveys the amazing chain of events that wrenched Europe out of the Enlightenment and into the age of democracy. In this masterful work, listeners will encounter the French Revolution from the storming of the Bastille to the guillotining of the king; and the revolution's leaders - Danton, Desmoulins, Robespierre, and Saint-Just - all cut down by the reign of terror they inaugurated.

What were the forces that led to one of history's most protracted and legendary periods of conflict? How did they affect the three great civilizations that participated in them? And, ultimately, why did they end and what did they accomplish? In these 36 lectures, you'll look at the "big picture" of the Crusades as an ongoing period of conflict involving Western Christendom (we would now call it Western Europe), the Byzantine Empire, and the Muslim world.
