Historia
This magnificent novel by one of America's finest writers is the epic of one man's remarkable journey, set in 19th-century America against the background of a vanishing people and a rich way of life. At the age of 12, under the Wind moon, Will is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. It is during this time that he grows into a man, learning, as he does, of the raw power it takes to create a life, to find a home.

Hundreds of books few worthy of reviews
Revisado: 06-24-19
This is a work of Dixie. That said, I am moved beyond adequate words to say how great a work this is. Characters so vivid and vibrant brought to life by the indomitable Will Patton. Story captures the plight of the Native Americans and the ruthless, relentless pursuit of “civilization” by the US. Aside from the history, this is a beautiful story of growing up and growing old. A retrospective view of life, love, the choices made, the regrets we think about as we age. I think this is my favorite book this year.

Perfectly Captured Through the Eyes of a Twelve-Year-Old
Revisado: 03-19-18
This book is for anyone who is of a certain age and grew up in a small town. I saw my own childhood in this story (even though I am a girl who grew up in rural MN) and the magic of childhood friends, the closeness of family, the angst of school, burgeoning into a ‘tween, and the lore and legend of small town America.
This story has everything: friends and bullies, a mystery with nefarious characters, the magic of childhood imagination, the child’s interpretation of adult parenting and relationships, a first crush, and a wonderful perspective on the civil rights in the 60s as seen through the eyes of a child in Alabama. I don’t think I would change a thing in this story.

Historia
Why do only a few people get to say "I love my job?" It seems unfair that finding fulfillment at work is like winning a lottery; that only a few lucky ones get to feel valued by their organizations, to feel like they belong. Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling fulfilled. This is not a crazy, idealized notion. Today, in many successful organizations, great leaders are creating environments in which people naturally work together to do remarkable things.

Affirms what I already believed.
Revisado: 05-01-15
This is about true leadership and the biology of leaders and followers. It hit home with great examples what I already believed and inspires me to be a better leader. Note: this is about leadership, not being the boss. The two often are not related. Will pass this on to others.

Changes is an appropriate title.
Revisado: 04-19-15
I found myself liking this book less than the others about half way through it and thought it might be "the turning point" where the author started to slip. It happens in the best of series and is always a disappointment for the hard core reader. I was wrong, I will admit. The author pulled off a spectacular finish and managed to mostly keep true to the characters. If you are a first-time reader of the Harry Dresden series you will want to start with one of the earlier books. For those newbies there is just too much of the storyline dependent on prior knowledge of the story. In Jim Butcher style, he generally writes the series where the reader can jump in at any point and enjoy. This book is not that way. Start early for new folk--this is a great series and should be savored.

Love how the characters evolve
Revisado: 04-12-15
This has become a favorite series of mine and I am not sure how it happened. I generally don't go in for this particular genre, but I am hooked! Love the colorful characters and most of all I love that you could really just about jump in on any given book in the series and still be able to track and appreciate the story as a stand-alone. The narration is spot on. Love this series and can't wait to get started on the next one.

I was wrong. This one is even better. I love Harry, I love the characters around him. One of my favorite things about the series is that small bits of information will come back in a later story line.

Historia
It begins in Toronto, in the years after the smart drug revolution. Any high school student with a chemjet and internet connection can download recipes and print drugs, or invent them. A seventeen-year-old street girl finds God through a new brain-altering drug called Numinous, used as a sacrament by a new Church that preys on the underclass. But she is arrested and put into detention, and without the drug, commits suicide. Lyda Rose, another patient in that detention facility, has a dark secret: She was one of the original scientists who developed the drug.

A very different kind of story
Revisado: 03-16-15
Loved this. Set in the near future and full of interesting characters and some pretty good science and philosophy in the midst of whodunit. This was a very pleasant surprise. I won't belabor the plot as other reviewers have already done that. Well worth the time and effort to read it.

Harry Dresden, Chicago's only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But he also knows that whenever things are going good, the only way left for them to go is bad. Way bad. Recent examples: A duel with the lethal champion of the Red Court, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards...Hit men using Harry for target practice...The missing Shroud of Turin - and the possible involvement of Chicago's most feared mob boss.

Keeps getting better
Revisado: 03-08-15
I did not expect to like this series as much as I did. I got the first two audiobooks as a promotion and was so pleasantly surprised to really enjoy them! The narrator does a fabulous job of being a believable Harry. One of the things I am liking about this series the most is that the characters are all well defined, but the author doesn't feel like he has to use all of them in every book. A major character in one book may take a minor supporting role in another book but you don't feel "gyped" because he introduces you other great characters. I also appreciate that the author will allude to past adventures but does not feel he has to regurgitate the whole story. He instead makes you want to read it to discover the details. Glad there is a lot more in this series, I am ready to start the next one.

Any additional comments?
I really, really like this series. I have to confess that I only read these first two books because Audible offered them up as a special to discover new series. I am a native Minnesotan and the tone rings true to life. I love how these are written with obvious deep respect for the Native American culture and people. Cork is a believable protagonist; sometimes I get tired of the hero who is nearly supernatural in his/her looks, abilities, and powers of deduction all the while making poor choices that lead to dramatic scenarios, only to have them narrowly escape and live to continue the chase. While there is plenty of action and he obviously survives for another book in the series, the scenes seem realistic as to what you would expect of Cork. I also appreciate that while the adventures of the first book are alluded to, it is in a general manner and with only the subtle details to make the present understandable. The author does not feel he has to regurgitate the entire story (making you feel that you are coming into the story in the middle) so that if this were the first book you read in the series, you would not feel left out--it is a great stand-alone story. Overall, I am glad I discovered a new series, and look forward to the rest.
