Finding the human in the negotiation
Revisado: 02-04-19
I am wary of conflict and normally stay away from confrontation. So when I read the line, “don’t avoid honest, clear conflict,” I started to get anxious. The thought of facing someone head on makes my skin crawl and stomach roll.
In this book, thought, Chris Voss teaches you how you can do this, even if it doesn’t feel natural at first. The stories he tells (I’m a sucker for behind-the-scenes law-enforcement stories and this book is chock full of them), coupled by a blow-by-blow application of the tactics, drive home the lessons he shares. Like that of any good instructor, his outlines and summaries are clear, punctuated by his humor and candor, and reinforced by repetition.
What really reveals his view point on the whole matter of negotiation is how he ties it all up at the end: “One can only be an exceptional negotiator and a great person by both listening and speaking clearly and empathetically. By treating counterparts and oneself with dignity and respect.”
Not that I’m looking for a fight, but I’d love to apply what I’ve learned right away! 🧐

Learned a lot, but could be more succinct.
Revisado: 10-12-18
Overall, I picked up quite a bit from this book and it also reinforced some things I’ve been thinking about. The author has done a good job simplifying concepts (fear, samskara, the conscious self) but is not the most succinct writer. He keeps repeating phrases, and maybe it’s because he needs to drive home a point. Some ideas were still vague and abstract, like his instruction of “just let go” — it was almost like banging my head against the wall with it.
The author doesn’t use a lot of concrete examples and has a lot or detailed analogies. I do like how he referenced various faiths and terminologies from these, showing that, in the end, we are all talking about the same thing. At the end, I was looking for something to tie everything together to the title.
All that said, this was a great book to get me aligned and grounded to back my practices of yoga and meditation.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

An education about life
Revisado: 08-25-18
The title is so apt on so many levels! I learned so much about a culture very distant from my world, and about how love reveals itself in so many forms we may not always understand.
I was surprised by the strength of the human spirit and how far faith can take someone.
It’s a lovely story about what home can mean to anyone.
Brilliant performance by Julia Whelan.

Historia
Linda Rottenberg has spent her career helping innovators think big. "If people aren't calling you crazy, you aren't thinking big enough," she says. These days taking chances isn't just for young college dropouts in hoodies. Whether you work at a Fortune 500 company, a non-profit, or a mom-and pop store, everybody needs to think and act like a changemaker. We all need to be nimble, adaptive, daring, and maybe even a little crazy, or risk being left behind.

Brimming with stories!
Revisado: 12-13-16
An enjoyable book through and through! I love how Linda Rottenberg read it, enjoyed all the anecdotes she cited and appreciated all the the insights she shared. What a wonderfully comprehensive gift to entrepreneurs (and all readers). I will definitely come back to it again and again, and share her words of wisdom.
I have a newfound respect for Endeavor and hope to be an Endeavor entrepreneur one day. My kind of community development.

Really enjoyed the way Gay Hendricks reads the book. Makes you feel like he's talking to you directly and his humor shines through. There were many great tips and insights but I feel I'm still missing a component to help connect the dots. Maybe I'll hear it the next time I listen to the book -- which I definitely will!

This book was akin to a splash of cold water or slap on the face. Really made me reconsider all the assumptions I've formed over the years -- or "truths" I've just accepted at face value. Not sure yet how it's going to change how I do things but sure shook things up for me.

Historia
A business parable about how to create a start-up that won't trap you when you want to sell it. According to John Warrillow, the number one mistake entrepreneurs make is to build a business that relies too heavily on them. Thus, when the time comes to sell, buyers aren't confident that the company-even if it's profitable-can stand on its own. To illustrate this, Warrillow introduces us to a fictional small business owner named Alex who is struggling to sell his advertising agency.

Cal Newport presented a convincing argument for questioning the way we do things. Some ideas currently seem a bit extreme to me but definitely worth trying out and seeing how I can adapt these practices to my life. Looking forward to increased productivity and deep work!
