Prompts You to Examine Cultural Stereotypes

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-01-11

I disagree with the other review that is posted in terms of the critique of the characters because I found their experiences and perspectives to be very thought-provoking. As I listened to the text, I didn't focus solely on the written (or spoken in this case) word. Instead, I took the opportunity to step into the shoes of various minorities and view the world through their eyes. What an enlightening encounter to peek into the lives of those who experience the world and differently than I.

With this approach, I found a realistic perspective of the ways in which my diverse group of students may experience the world and the stereotypes into which they are often placed by society. This was also an opportunity for me to examine my own unconscious perceptions of stereotypes. It is uncommon for a book to afford such an opportunity to its readers.

I would recommend this book to all educators, especially those who work with a diverse population of students. While I do agree with the other review in terms of the lack of development of the plot, I feel that this is midigated by the chance to view the world through someone else's experiences.

Life SAVING and Informative!

5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 01-08-11

This is a MUST READ for any educator or person who believes they may need to seek treatment for adult ADD/ADHD. I have always told people that "It takes people like me to make everyone else look normal." I literally cried through so many portions of the book as I felt like I had finally found someone who understood me and the struggles I have had throughout life. After having been unsuccessfully treated in the past for generalized anxiety disorder and depression (separately), I am now looking to find a doctor who specializes in adult ADD. This book succeeds in providing detailed information in so many areas regarding diagnosis, treatment options, and more; I feel very well versed in what I need to do to get on the right path for successful treatment of the REAL issues I face. The stories in this book will resonate with anyone who has lived with undiagnosed ADD. This would also be an excellent book for family members of those who have ADD.

As an educator, I found this book to be tremendously enlightening as to the additional symptoms/issues that are often coupled with ADD/ADHD. Educating teachers on the true issues of ADD/ADHD and the associated problems would serve students well.

Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, Book Three) Audiolibro Por Suzanne Collins arte de portada

Disappointing Selection

Revisado: 08-29-10

I couldn't wait for the release of this title. I was fascinated by the first two books in the trilogy, but the final installment of the trilogy leaves much to be desired. The writing is disappointingly graphic and the mood of this novel reaches a new level of darkness for the trilogy. I would have thought that a talented writer such as Collins would not have to resort to gore and explicit violence as a basis for her writing.

While this series is not cited as a love story, I was left dumbfounded at the author's resolution to the main character's internal conflict of which of her suitors will beome her life's companion. The epilougue is an inadequate attempt to wrap up the trilogy in a sloppy, depressing pacackage.

I wish I had not listened to the third book, as I find that it has lessened my appreciation for the first two. As an educator, I certainly would not recommend this to my intermediate/middle grade students as I had the first two books. To that point, I don't think I would recommend this to mature writer's either.
