Historia
A third son to an earl, Adam Gillensford knows his only hope of an inheritance is through his great uncle. But when the Will is read, Adam learns most of the wealth has been left to a complete stranger, and a seamstress at that. If he hopes to salvage any kind of funds for himself, he has two choices: adhere to his late uncle’s wishes and assist the new heiress in finding her way, or sabotage her so the courts will find her unfit to inherit. Deciding his course would be easier if the heiress wasn’t so enchanting.

Well-written
Revisado: 11-19-19
I have a problem with Sally Britton’s books. I never finish. Not because the books are bad, but because they are so well-done. I can only listen to a few chapters before I feel inspired to try writing myself.
Now, it would be simple to enjoy these books as a reader. The narrator is very talented. I loved her varied voices and different accents for each character. The books are sweet, funny, have happy endings, great characters, etc. I am sure you will find many reviews that elaborate on the entertainment value of this novel. In short, there is a reason these books sell so well.
But they have a second utility. They are great for the many writers of this type of fiction to study. I get caught up in noting examples of things she has done really well and highlighting lessons I need to try to implement myself. She does a fantastic job of weaving the description of the scenery into her narrative. There are these adorable little witticisms sprinkled into her writing. Like the way she explained that as a red-head, the main character was cursed to flush (you will hear the actual line and get my meaning in the first chapter). There are several books on writing that suggest one must use the first chapter to make the main character likable. In a story like this one, where a character is immediately blessed with incredible good fortune, this is element is extra important. In this first chapter, she provides no less than five solid examples of over the top charitable acts the heroine has performed, but does so in such a natural manner, the reader doesn’t feel like they are being manipulated with a heavy handed approach. Instead, they simply ends up caring about her characters. Her word choice is varied and interesting. Her pacing is perfect.
It is one thing to read books on writing. It is educational and helpful. But reading Sally’s books is like seeing those lessons in practice. They say if you want to improve your own writing, you must read great writers. The books on writing are like a desk manual for the job. Reading novels that practice the skills discussed in these how-to books is more like on-the-job training. On my to-do list is to sit down with each of Sally’s books and read them all straight through. There is a lot to be learned from her technique. She is truly talented. I really appreciate receiving a free copy of this audio book. Maybe without the printed text in front of me, I can at last enjoy the tale instead of getting caught up in fan-girling over the technique.
