Cannot keep listening to narration!!
Revisado: 04-16-23
once again i am shocked by what the producers of some audio books put out as final product. did anyone actually LISTEN to this once it was completed?? the narration is so unbearable, I'm stopping the audio version and ordering the paperback because i love the story. the narration sounds like if you took the staccato, overly dramatic diction of captain Kirk and mixed in a robotic monotone with a weird, low-register, nasal fry. on top of that, the narrator's accent is bizarre and anoying ("air" is "are"). every character sounds clinically depressed and over everything. Absolutely awful.

Historia
The prequel to Dracula, inspired by notes and texts left behind by the author of the classic novel, Dracul is a supernatural thriller that reveals not only Dracula's true origins but Bram Stoker's - and the tale of the enigmatic woman who connects them. It is 1868, and a 21-year-old Bram Stoker waits in a desolate tower to face an indescribable evil. Armed only with crucifixes, holy water, and a rifle, he prays to survive a single night, the longest of his life. Desperate to record what he has witnessed, Bram scribbles down the events that led him here....

I loved this so much!
Revisado: 03-28-23
I'm a big fan of Bram Stoker's dracula and this origin story was amazing. Yes, at times it seems to move slow, but it is so worth it to hang on. the historical notes at the end are a fitting and extraordinary finale. The narration and voice acting were confusing at times, but overall very good.

Historia
After the loss of his parents, young Jack Thatch first met Stella as a child - this cryptic little girl of eight with dark hair and darker eyes, sitting alone on a bench in the cemetery clutching her favorite book. The body of a man found in an alley, every inch of his flesh horribly burned, yet his clothing completely untouched. For Detective Faustino Brier, this wasn't the first, and he knew it wouldn't be the last. Isolated and locked away from the world in a shadowy lab, a little boy known only as Subject "D" waits, grows, learns. He's permitted to speak to no one.

if you can stick through it, it's worth it!
Revisado: 02-01-23
Koontz and King are my favorite authors so i was excited about this read. Barker is close, but definitely no cigar.
The good:
interesting spin on the experiment-gone-wrong premise, well-developed characters, some genuinely good storytelling, excellent narration for most male characters
The not so good:
Waaaaay too long, somewhat repetitive, will push your suspension of disbelief almost to breaking. The female voices by the narrator are awful! Especially Stella who is supposed to be a young, beautiful, enigmatic creature and instead sounds like a prim, 70 year old librarian. I got past it, but...cringe! I will never understand why audio book producers refuse to use gender appropriate narrators. does it really cost that much more to have one male and one female narrator? Do these producers ever actually listen to the finished product???? Rant over.😁

Historia
Years ago, the SS Arcadia vanished without a trace during a routine voyage. Though a garbled emergency message was broadcast, neither the ship nor any of its crew could be found. Sixty years later, its wreck has finally been discovered more than 300 miles from its intended course...a silent graveyard deep beneath the ocean's surface. Cove and her dive team have been granted permission to explore the Arcadia's rusting hull. Their purpose is straightforward: examine the wreck, film everything, and, if possible, uncover how and why the supposedly unsinkable ship vanished.

cut the middle 20 chapters and it would be a solid novel. Narrator is hit and miss, too plaintive and whiny. is vocal fry the only trick female narrators have for male voices? ugh!

Gregor, a seemingly single man, is found bludgeoned and left for dead in his apartment, but the discovery of children's toys raises more questions than answers. Every night, Ruby gazes into Gregor’s apartment, leading to the discovery of his secret family: his unusually silent daughter and his mentally unstable wife, Constance, who insists that she is descended from the mythological selkies. She begs Ruby to aid in finding the sealskin that Gregor has hidden from her, making it impossible to return to her people.

absolutely fabulous story. beautifully written.

no major plot holes. evocative. intriguing. would love to see this in movie form. the narration is hit and miss. it was ok for the most part, but many of the male characters just sounded like they had a bad cold. i know that there are tons of British accents depending on the region, but I found this one annoying, especially because Joanna's accent in the first book was so different. but overall, a great listening experience.

the story is preposterous, the characters flimsy and unlikeable, the dialogue is hokey and cliched and the main character Katy, is narrated in a super-whiny, overly-dramatic way that grates on your nerves after 5 minutes. I knew 3 chapters in who the perpetrators were. boring, formulaic and dumb. DO. NOT. LISTENT. You're welcome.

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

TOO MUCH!
Revisado: 01-06-22
I had such high hopes for this book having loved Sharp Objects so much. But it's an understatement to say those hopes were dashed, stepped on and obliterated. This story is the literary equivalent of watching hours and hours of starving children in a third world country. It is relentlessly depressing from begining to end. There is no wit or humor to relieve the often senseless graphic brutality of this book, including the drawn out description of the horrific, senseless
slaughter of an animal. Every single character, even the minor ones, is pathetic, mentally unbalanced and reprehensible. There is no one to cheer for, no one to sympathise with and no one to care about. And then there are the numerous, unintentionally laughable coincidences that drive the story. I cannot believe a writer of Gillian Flynn's calibre would resort to such amateurish and insulting tricks with not even an ounce of irony to soften make them more palatable. At the end, all I get from this book is that deep inside she must hate people, animals and pretty much everything in the world. Girl, get some help!
