A little thick in the weeds but a good understanding of the man.

I really just wanted to know why America was named after this guy since everyone knows that Colombus was the first [sic] European to sail to the new world. The author nearly avoids that whole question until the last chapter.
I could have used a little less coverage of what Europe, Florence, Spain, etc was like back then.
It was interesting to know how much we don’t know about him due to lost or misappropriated letters and contemporary exaggerations.

The book does cover a long period of history so it’s understandable that the author can’t get too deep into details, but the book could use some analysis. Answers to how and why events happen are completely absent. Nearly every sentence is [leader] [date] [event]. Which means he covers about 100 years of history in about 2 paragraphs. This makes basically the entire history full of unmemorable events.

Interesting premise, but still needs much more research

The author’s premise, at least as expressed through this book, is full of generalizations on why the Chinese must have made trips to the Americas over the span of millennia.

His premise that people couldn’t have crossed a land bridge because he wasn’t able to do a similar journey today, completely ignores the fact that the climates of 20,000 years ago was very different than today.

There are several chapters that have nothing to do with the premise of the book, such as his long description of a vacation he took along the Silk Road.

Also annoyingly, I’m fairly certain he mispronounces many of the Chinese names.

Would you try another book from Miguel de Cervantes and Edith Grossman (translator) and/or George Guidall?

Unlikely

What do you think your next listen will be?

Honor of the Queen

What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Does an excellent job bringing Don Quixote and Sancho to life

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Just the audio depiction of the characters

Any additional comments?

Not sure how this is a classic. Something like 80% of the book has no relevance to the plot or ending. It is very wandering and contains many sentences that an English teacher would dock for not contributing anything useful to the story telling.
