Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Such an inspirational book, narrated by a master!
Revisado: 02-05-24
I have listened to this book three times, and each time I am inspired and deeply moved by the tenacity and good hearted nature of these boys. The detailed historical background is important for all Americans. Edward Herrmann is my very favorite narrator.
By the way, don’t think that you know this book if you’ve only seen the movie. The picture is good, but it couldn’t possibly contain the depth of the book.

A compelling, well-told story based on facts and real characters from post-Revolution America. If I were still teaching fifth graders I would definitely use this novel.

Although this book was a masterful representation of life under a totalitarian regime, the shifting timeline, shifting narrators, unfamiliar names, and confusing identities made it difficult for me to follow aurally.

Historia
Brilliantly executed and compulsively listenable, Unsheltered is the story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum, as they navigate the challenges of surviving a world in the throes of major cultural shifts. In this mesmerizing story told in alternating chapters, Willa and Thatcher come to realize that though the future is uncertain, even unnerving, shelter can be found in the bonds of kindred - whether family or friends - and in the strength of the human spirit.

Incessant preaching by unappealing characters
Revisado: 06-06-19
While I heartily endorse most of Ms Kingsolver’s political views, I found this book to be tedious and contrived.
I was also put off by the broad brush strokes painting all Christian/Jewish thought as anti-intellectual and backwards.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In 1855, three years after it was published, it was called "the most popular novel of our day." A thrilling and important piece of American literature!

Great book, poor performance
Revisado: 06-17-16
I did truly enjoy the story--despite the somewhat dated language and Dickensian plot, I think it is timely even today. However, the affected accents of the reader, her mispronunciations, and her attempts to sing the "old Methodist hymns" were annoying and distracting.
