Excellent Writing
Revisado: 10-23-19
I really liked the writing, the author is creative and knows how to spin a yarn. The ending keeps you guessing. The ending is like none I've experienced.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Just Incredible!
Revisado: 01-16-19
"Men tell stories", but this is one story that can only be told by a woman. Hannah has provided a brilliant narrative of World War II like none other. Her Nightingale transformed my understanding of the War and what it meant to survive as a woman in occupied France. One of the best stories I have read.

Ready for updating
Revisado: 09-10-18
The book is thorough but doesn't translate well to audiobook format. The reading of URLs is troublesome and not very useful. Still, the narrator's voice is appropriate for the subject and presents the authors words authentically.

First read result, needs another reading!
Revisado: 02-14-18
This book is intelligent, coherent, and dense. It is artfully constructed and covers a tremendous amount of thinking expertly and with great care. I wish I could absorb it all on my first read... alas, it will take much more. It might be easy to discount this work if you ignore its premise, but to embrace its premise is to require mastery of its content. Listening to Derek Perkins (narrator) will make it easy to experience the book a second and third time, he is a riveting reader.

Maybe an allegory?
Revisado: 11-08-17
I'm not wild about this style of writing - starting out as if the reader is already familiar with the story and subtly dropping little kernels of detail that flesh things out. It seems like trying to cover up for not having much to share. I can see some timely topics, but I'm going to have to process for a while to figure out what those topics are.

Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

Reading a Textbook
Revisado: 06-13-17
I loved the story, but the storytelling was disappointing. It read like a Textbook, full of information, dates, names, and facts. But, in audiobook format, it was difficult to keep the characters straight. I was hoping for a more biographical approach, but didn't hear that until the epilogue.

VERY WONKY BUT EXCELLENT FOR THE RIGHT AUDIENCE
Revisado: 03-11-17
I teach strategic management in a business school, so my interests are relatively specialized, this history fit the bill. For feeling like I can now give a good general history of corporate governance and shareholder activism in the United States, I could rarely find anything better. However, if this isn't your cup 'o tea, well then, read at your own peril!

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Revisado: 01-17-17
In a world of uncertainty and change, The Book Thief contains an important message. There are many truths and only humanness connects us. Friends and enemies, conquerer and conquered, we all meet death eventually. This is a beautifully told story of how to live so as not to be afraid at its coming.

Historia
In this irreverent and illuminating audiobook, acclaimed writer and scientist Leonard Mlodinow shows us how randomness, chance, and probability reveal a tremendous amount about our daily lives, and how we misunderstand the significance of everything from a casual conversation to a major financial setback. As a result, successes and failures in life are often attributed to clear and obvious causes, when in actuality they are more profoundly influenced by chance.

Title aptly describes the book
Revisado: 03-12-15
This author writes in a very logical, yet interesting style. The stories both inform and entertain. The book provides an interesting history about numbers, formulae, theories and how they all developed. It is told in such a way as to provide insight while making the concept of randomness meaningful and useful on an everyday basis.
