Historia
Rain slicked streets, riots, murder, chaos. It’s July 1992 and the Troubles in Northern Ireland are still grinding on after twenty-five apocalyptic years. Detective Inspector Sean Duffy got his family safely over the water to Scotland, to “Shortbread Land”. Duffy’s a part-timer now, only returning to Belfast six days a month to get his pension. It’s an easy gig, if he can keep his head down.

Sean & Crabby Finally Return!
Revisado: 04-21-25
Another cracking good Sean Duffy novel, so good I'll be listening to it again shortly. This was one of my favorites of the entire run. The Land Rover ambush chapters are worth the price.
Hope it's not that long before the next book!
As always, kudos to narrator Gerard Doyle.

Historia
Between December 16, 1944 and January 15, 1945, American forces found themselves entrenched in the heavily forested Ardennes region of Belgium, France, and Luxembourg defending against an advancing German army amid freezing temperatures, deep snow, and dense fog. Operation Herbstnebel - Autumn Mist - was a massive German counter-offensive that stunned the Allies in its scope and intensity.

Bad Narration Of A Good Book
Revisado: 01-22-23
The narrator sounds like he's not at all human. I'll try to listen for the entire book, but this guy shows no emotion. It'll be a rough listen for 31+ hours.
Hope any future books have a much better narrator

Part 1 of 3!
Revisado: 08-25-22
I'm 68 now, so I still plan on reading Part 2, which isn't due 'til possibly 2024. Lewisohn did 10 years of research for this whopper alone (audio is 43: hours, 43 minutes!). He says Part 2 is taking even longer.
I'm not gonna hold my breath for Part 3.
One might think there wouldn't be much left to write about The Fabs, but this behemoth proves otherwise.
Kudos to narrator for Clive Mantle for his smooth delivery, hopefully he'll be around to narrate Parts 2 & 3 (whenever that may be).

In The Comedians, comedy historian Kliph Nesteroff brings to life a century of American comedy with real-life characters, forgotten stars, mainstream heroes and counterculture iconoclasts. Based on over 200 original interviews and extensive archival research, Nesteroff's groundbreaking work is a narrative exploration of the way comedians have reflected, shaped, and changed American culture over the past 100 years.

The Good, The Bad & The Fugly Of The History Of Co
Revisado: 08-25-22
I heard Kliph a few times on the late Gilbert
Gottfried's podcast. The guy was well versed on the history of comedy, plus he had countless stories, the good, the bad & the f'in hysterical.
I downloaded both of his books (We Had A Little Real Estate Problem is his second, about Native American comics & their struggles to hit the big time, or even make a living), and I've listened to them each a few times, sometimes laughing out loud while I'm walking our two Labs.
Nesteroff narrates both books. I read a few reviews whining about his lapses into the gravelly voice of funnyman Jack Carter. That's a very minor quibble, I don't really mind it at all, and I could barely stand Jack Carter.
Hopefully, Kliph will do another book of this type. So many recent comedians were given a mere mention, some not mentioned at all. Plenty of untold stories for Part 2!

Historia
Small though they were, PT boats played a key role in World War II, carrying out an astonishing variety of missions where fast, versatile, and strongly armed vessels were needed. Called "weapons of opportunity", they met the enemy at closer quarters and with greater frequency than any other type of surface craft. Among the most famous PT commanders was John F. Kennedy, whose courageous actions in the Pacific are now well known to the American public.

One Of The Best I've Read
Revisado: 08-25-22
Okay, one of the best I've ever listened to, not literally read.
Time flew by while listening to the 18+ hours of this book, my interest never flagged, it was over too soon. It's in my queue to listen again, and I'd consider buying the hardcover if I found it used.
Mike Chamberlain's narration is excellent.

Historia
The legendary Lone Star Cafe, a little corner of Texas right in the heart of New York City. At one time or another, everyone from the Rolling Stones to Willie Nelson has jammed there. But this night, Thanksgiving eve, there's a different type of jam at the Lone Star. Larry Barkin, half of the headlining Barkin Brothers, is found dead in his dressing room, his head bashed in with his own guitar and a two dollar bill stuffed in his shirt pocket. It's Kinky they call for help, but the fast-talking, cigar-smoking country singer turned amateur detective has other plans.

Narrator, Do Your Homework !!!
Revisado: 03-27-22
Mike Dawson channels Kinky extremely well, sans the Texas accent. He's a fine narrator for this series.
But the title of one Hank Williams tune, one of his most famous, one's that's very important to the story, is mispronounced through the entire recording.
How difficult would it have been to find the actual pronunciation of "Kaw-Liga"?

They might be the type of people who conduct interviews in the shadows of a hotel somewhere. Voices electronically altered. What they know could have changed the course of American history. Though their lives were touched by the tragedy of November 22, 1963, a great many factors, fear among them, kept them silent. Until now.

Narration Errors Are Countless!
Revisado: 03-30-21
Excellent book, dragged down by the audio narration. Why weren't all these sore-thumb errors addressed before this audiobook was released?
The narrator has a very listenable voice, but the rampant mispronunciations, the robotic, one-line-at-a-time reading, topped by poor editing was disconcerting. I soldiered on anyway, hoping it would improve, but it got ever worse.
After 2/3 of the book, I found the mistakes got funnier as I listened along, eventually I found it kind of endearing.
Nothing against the book, or Brenda G. Brown, but did anyone listen to this before it was released? Give the narrator a chance for some do-overs?

Can't Blame A Guy For Selling Out
Revisado: 07-17-19
(Reviewing the audiobook)
An author whose earlier work I devoured has put out a lame, tame, predictable, annoying clunker of a book, The Chain. Adrian McKinty deserves a bestseller, and this is just type of book that'll move units in the US. McKinty deserves much sales, he's that good. So I hope this book is a financial pleasure for him.
The Chain is chock full of cliche'd characters so uninteresting I forgot their names a couple of times. None of them, not even the kids, are even remotely likable. There's not one iota of humor here. The story is dull, the bad folks are, well, bad. The climax of the story fizzles like a wet firecracker.
At several points, I was tempted to stop listening and return it unfinished. But since McKinty's become one of my favorite fiction authors over the past few years, I soldiered on. Maybe there'd be an upswing in final third. Nope. Not this time.
The narrator does a fine job making these unlikable folks even more so, though her voicing of the whiny kids in the story is shrill and piercing.
A few months down the road, I'll give The Chain another listen. Most of the author's earlier work has been worth revisiting, so perhaps this story will grow on me.
I owe the guy that much.
