Historia
The Ottoman Empire has long been depicted as the Islamic Asian antithesis of the Christian European West. But the reality was starkly different: the Ottomans’ multiethnic, multilingual, and multireligious domain reached deep into Europe’s heart. Indeed, the Ottoman rulers saw themselves as the new Romans. Recounting the Ottomans’ remarkable rise from a frontier principality to a world empire, historian Marc David Baer traces their debts to their Turkish, Mongolian, Islamic, and Byzantine heritage.

Fukuyama examines the effects of corruption on governance, and why some societies have been successful at rooting it out. He explores the different legacies of colonialism in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, and offers a clear-eyed account of why some regions have thrived and developed more quickly than others. And he boldly reckons with the future of democracy in the face of a rising global middle class and entrenched political paralysis in the West.

Historia
On Death and Dying began as a theoretical book, an interdisciplinary study of our fear of death and our inevitable acceptance of it. It introduced the world to the now-famous five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. On Grief and Grieving applies these stages to the process of grieving and weaves together theory, inspiration, and practical advice, all based on Kübler-Ross' and Kessler's professional and personal experiences.

Just what I needed after loosing my Dad
Revisado: 07-20-21
This book does not help me easing my grief for my Dad who suddenly passed away two months ago. It helps me to understand the grieving process, provided me with what it to come, and showed me that there is no end goal. One does not "get over" a loss, one learns to live with a loss. The human experience at its full circle.

Historia
In this groundbreaking book, the philosopher Martin Hägglund challenges our received notions of faith and freedom. The faith we need to cultivate, he argues, is not a religious faith in eternity but a secular faith devoted to our finite life together. He reveals that all spiritual questions of freedom are inseparable from economic and material conditions. What ultimately matters is how we treat one another in this life, and what we do with our time together.

Secular spiritual freedom and capitalism
Revisado: 06-30-21
This book is very insightful. The author systematically develops the knowledge on the basic terms and proposed solution while righting some misconceptions on writings of Marx, Hayek and others. The author proposes a change of value proposition of social wealth namely to change from 'capital growth' to 'individual, available free time.' We often take capitalism was 'God-given' the author makes a good case this is not only false, but ultimately not sustainable or desirable. Great read, great production!

Historia
At 74, Yalom has penned a book that is the climax of his lifework, focusing on the universal human issues of mortality and death. He suggests that what he calls the "awakening experience" can help us acknowledge, accept, and utilize our fear of death in a very positive manner. Such an awakening experience can be as simple as a dream, or quick as a sudden insight. It is often a loss, a trauma, or just plain aging that can prompt an awakening experience that is a turning point for a more meaningful life.

The content of this book make it ok to listen to the poor performance audio experience. One could not have picked a more monotonous, pompous and dispassionate narrator to read the fundamental truths of life.

Historia
An unimpeachable classic work in political philosophy, intellectual and cultural history, and economics, The Road to Serfdom has inspired and infuriated politicians, scholars, and the public for half a century. Originally published in 1944 - when Eleanor Roosevelt supported the efforts of Stalin, and Albert Einstein subscribed lock, stock, and barrel to the socialist program - The Road to Serfdom was seen as heretical for its passionate warning against the dangers of state control over the means of production.

Either side of the argument should read this book
Revisado: 02-28-21
I don't understand how narrators can be selected reading a book without being able to pronounce the quotations of the author in his native language. This book was insightful and entertaining to read, especially since I don't agree with all aspects of the view of the author. At a minimum it taught me to clearly state my understanding of words misused in public discuss today.

On Inhumanity is bracing and vital listen in a world lurching towards authoritarian political regimes, resurgent white nationalism, refugee crises that breed nativist hostility, and fast-spreading racist rhetoric. The book will open your eyes to the pervasive dangers of dehumanization and the prejudices that can too easily take root within us, and resist them before they spread into the wider world.

A must-read introduction to dehumanization
Revisado: 01-15-21
This book clearly defined dehumanization and separates it from related topic such as racism, sexism, ableism, etc. It provides a template of identifying the beginning of dehumanization on oneself and in one's environment. A must-read during times of rising populism and authoritarianism.
