Too much standing on Ceremony....
Revisado: 11-17-24
Unfortunately, the most interesting character is the chauffeur, BUT NOT enough to keep me interested. Disappointed too, as I see there are many books in the series and was looking forward to tucking in. Just can't take all the pomp and circumstance.

Historia
Forty-two-year-old Mia Thorne is not living her best life. After a disastrous career-and-relationship-ending event, she escapes New York City and moves to a sleepy river town in Pennsylvania, courtesy of a dead aunt she never knew. Aunt Hazel was the reclusive family nut, a self-proclaimed psychic. Of course, Mia’s dad always told her that she, too, had the gift, but after his death, her mother made sure to squelch the notion. When Mia stumbles over a body in the overgrown garden, the newcomer catches the eye of the police chief and his hotshot detective, Derek Fairfax.

Really like the story, but...
Revisado: 06-22-24
An excellent story - any time I can't figure out the murderer in 5 minutes is a WIN.
Needs a better narrator - I make a living listening to voices, and this narrator needs a bit of work - not enough timbre differentiation in her "voices".
Main character also needs a bit of work - I was amazed to find a 42-year-old woman did not know what a compost pile was, and it pulled me right out of the story.

Historia
January 1910. A journalist has been killed in a suspicious blaze. Everything points to a group of suffragettes, but the apparent culprit insists she is innocent. When Lady Hardcastle receives a letter from a suffragette requesting her urgent help, the retired spy turned sleuth knows only she stands between an accused young woman and the gallows. Evidence at the scene makes Lizzie Worrel’s innocence difficult to believe, and with the police treating it as an open-and-shut case of arson, Lady Hardcastle faces a barrage of resistance as she tries to dig out the truth.

I just LOVE these stories! Definitely recommend!
Revisado: 06-10-24
Just love, love, LOVE these stories!
The narration is absolutely a dream - she does EVERY character fantastically well. I'm not sure I would get all the nuances if I didn't hear them in the narrator's voice, she really does these characters justice, well done Ms. Knowelden. And WELL DONE, Mr.Kinsey; his writing is so witty, charming, it's like taking the ultimate relaxing vacation for a few hours!
As always, I enjoyed the tidbits of history in this one as well.

Historia
The young man with the shock of white-blond hair lay spread-eagled on the floor, surrounded by fallen books. His hand reached out to the scattered pages, as though he was trying to tell her something. But who is he? How did he come to be killed in Flora’s ordinary little bookshop? Flora finds out he was staying at the Priory Hotel, and when the gardener suddenly dies in its beautiful grounds only a few days later, she is certain that something untoward is happening in her quiet village by the sea.

Needs work, but for a first try...
Revisado: 05-31-24
The narrator needs lessons in how to differentiate characters. She just reads the story straight and though she has a wonderful voice, it is somewhat hard to follow which character is which.
The story itself it okay; the characters are rather irritating at first and hard to get behind or identify with though they do grow throughout the story. Not sure I'll give another one a go, but I might. The murderer was quite obvious, so that would be a real deal breaker if the murderer is that obvious in the other stories.

Historia
September 1909, and Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, have been invited to Lord Riddlethorpe’s country estate for a week of motor racing and parties. They both agree that it sounds like a perfectly charming holiday. But when one of the drivers dies in a crash during the very first race, they discover that what seemed like an uncharacteristic error in judgement may have a more sinister explanation...

EXCELLENT characters and narration
Revisado: 05-22-24
Love these stories, this is my third one, and the narrator is a PERFORMER. She does the voices perfectly; not sure I would have caught all the nuances just reading the story.
These two characters, Lady Emily Hardcastle and Florence Armstrong, remind me of two incredibly special women in my life growing up, my mother and her best friend, who were also employer and employee though you'd never have known that. They had the same kind of relationship as these two characters. I ADORED them, and I ADORE these two characters. Although I did know the murderer right away, I did really enjoy the interactions of the characters and look forward to listening to more.
GREAT ENTERTAINMENT!

Historia
From the creation of the first encyclopedia to Wikipedia, from ancient museums to modern kindergarten classes—this is Simon Winchester’s brilliant and all-encompassing look at how humans acquire, retain, and pass on information and data, and how technology continues to change our lives and our minds. Throughout this fascinating tour, Winchester forces us to ponder what rational humans are becoming. What good is all this knowledge if it leads to lack of thought? What is information without wisdom?

Historia
Spring, 1909, and Lady Hardcastle, amateur sleuth and all-round eccentric, is enjoying a well-deserved rest. But a week after a trip to the cattle market, Spencer Caradine, a local farmer, turns up dead in the pub, face-down in his beef and mushroom pie. Once again, it is up to Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, to solve the case. Armed with wit and whimsy, not to mention Florence’s mean right hook, the pair set out to discover what really happened and why. Was it poison or just ill luck?

A storm is raging over Damson Island, a desolate yet beautiful rocky outcrop off the south coast of England. The island's magnificent main house belongs to theatre director Randall Dobson, a man desperate to have his play ready for its West End stage debut. With time running out, he asks leading cast members to attend final rehearsals there. Cut off from the mainland by the storm, tensions rise, accusations fly and secrets are whispered. But despite old rivalries resurfacing and jealousy rearing its ugly head, it still comes as a shock when one of their number is brutally murdered.

Although the pathway for the murderer was EXCELLENT, there wasn't a side plot that was interesting...as there was in Mystery at Watermeade Manor, my favorite so far.
