My Therapist Needs a Therapist
Revisado: 12-06-19
Therapists are blank slates who know how to listen without distraction are non-judgmental and have no problems of their own. If only. Lori Gottlieb tells fascinating tales through her eyes while grappling with her own anxieties. The book jumps cleverly back and forth between seeing patients and being seen as a patient. The way she hides the identities is very fun. Her ex is “Boyfriend” and her star patient is “John The Writer of a Famous TV Show” (Could it be “Monk”?)
The confidential stories she tells are engaging, heartbreaking and humorous. One wonders if she got permission to tell these tales or if her hidden identities were enough. Whatever the case, the book held my attention throughout and made me feel connected to all her patients, including herself. A great read/listen.

You’d be MAD not to listen this book!
Revisado: 08-27-19
What an amazing tale of undercover journalism by the amazing Nellie Bly aka Brown. Starting from her assignment and practice as a “crazy” person to the ultimate trial and renovations of Blackwell’s Island, you are gripped by details. You can practically feel yourself sitting next to her as she describes her ordeal.
Anyone with an interest in Mental Health, Social Reform, Women’s Rights or Undercover Journalism will be mesmerized from beginning to end. The narrator is excellent and brings the story to life. I wish all of Nellie Bly’s writings were on Audible.

Comey’s Wonderful (& Not So Wonderful) Life
Revisado: 07-29-19
This was a remarkable telling of Comey’s life starting from what motivated him to pursue a career in justice. It begins with his early family life and is extremely relatable to anyone who has had harrowing experiences before adulthood. He writes in an empathetic & sincere manner that almost anyone will find enjoyable, unless of course, you are one of the persons whom he has prosecuted.
The story line passes through The Giuliani Administration in NYC and on through the three presidencies of Bush, Obama and ending with Trump and his infamous “You’re fired!” of Comey. At first, I thought that most of the book would be devoted to Trump, but happily he only uses Chapter 12 to 14 on this matter.
In addition, The Epilogue ends on a high note. Comey’s reading voice is extremely steady and calming and easy to digest. Highly recommended!!!

Historia
Petros Papachristos devotes the early part of his life to trying to prove one of the greatest mathematical challenges of all time: Goldbach's Conjecture, the deceptively simple claim that every even number greater than two is the sum of two primes. Against a tableau of famous historical figures-among them G. H. Hardy, the self-taught Indian genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, and a young Kurt Godel-Petros works furiously to prove the notoriously difficult conjecture.

Assigned this Novel to my 'Math For Poets' Class
Revisado: 06-14-17
If you could sum up Uncle Petros and Goldbach's Conjecture in three words, what would they be?
Math Is Addictive
What other book might you compare Uncle Petros and Goldbach's Conjecture to and why?
Proof: The Play, Fermat's Room: The Movie. Truthfully, this is one of the most UNIQUE math novels that combines truth and fiction into a mystery. It is also HIGHLY accessible to non-mathematicians and is also LOTS of FUN! Even the more abstract parts such as Godel's Incompleteness Theorem, The Twin Prime Conjecture and of course, Goldbach's Conjecture are used expertly in the plot so that a professional understanding is not required to enjoy the mystery.
Which scene was your favorite?
The Ending--which I won't divulge!
Any additional comments?
When this book was first released in 1992, The Publisher was offering a MILLION dollar prize to anyone who could PROVE The GC. That is no longer the case, but nevertheless, this is a an expertly crafted book that combines Mathematical History and Lore into an engaging mystery. The Narrator was EXCELLENT in performing the various voices and accents. Highly recommended listening.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

A Metric Ton Better than The Movie!
Revisado: 06-14-17
Would you consider the audio edition of The Martian to be better than the print version?
This was such a remarkable book where true science and not-true fiction are woven into a wild tale of inter-planetary adventure. The elements of courage, survival, mystery and loyalty are combined in precise mathematical detail. As a math prof, I was enamored by the computations that The Martian undertakes to ensure his survival. The details of Mars are precise and vivid and make you feel you are exactly in his predicament.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Martian?
When The Martian's Astronaut Team defy their boss to attempt rescue.
Any additional comments?
I was amazed to learn that the author Andy Weir has a fear of flying!

An Alternate Reality & Fine Narration
Revisado: 06-13-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I've never read any books by EL Doctorow and this was a great introduction. I am now moving onto the next stories and will write more later.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Wakefield!!! I bought this book mainly for the first story "Wakefield" (which is now a movie) and was NOT disappointed! The narration was FINE. (unlike what the prior reviewer oddly wrote). The entire premise of the story was so absurd, but when you hear the writing, it becomes entirely believable. The story goes full circle and had me guessing to The End as to how it might end. There should definitely be a Sequel: Wakefield Part 2!!! : )
Who was the most memorable character of All the Time in the World and why?

LOYAL Doggie and GREAT Narration!!!
Revisado: 04-30-17
Any additional comments?
The entire story was gripping from start to finish, but what made the story come alive was the theatrics of the narrator. His numerous voices were so far-ranging and vivid. This book written from the POV of the hero cop Scott AND the hero dog Maggie was such a listening joy. I've never had a dog as a pet, but after hearing the loyalty and insight of these animals, I understand how people bond to these creatures even more than to humans. "They will stick close to you, long after your mate has cheated on you."

Girls are Scary!
Revisado: 08-27-16
Would you listen to Crush again? Why?
Yes, of course! There are so many clever lines in this book that you must listen to it again to catch all the cute wittiness. I laughed out loud during the Interview with Auntie Buzz and her 3.5 Marriages…she is every woman who has had disastrous relationships.
Which scene was your favorite?
Hard to pick just one, but probably when Kevin preps The Romantic Dinner for his parents out of Food Tubes and the ensuing chaos. Joshua Swanson should get a Tony for all his hilarious voices.
Any additional comments?
This series of books reminds me of The Bugs Bunny cartoons where adult satire is embedded all over. The books are great for teenagers, especially to upgrade their vocabulary. But they are equally funny for adults who already have lived through all that Kevin plans for his Amazing Romantic Future with his girlfriend--the one he hasn't had a chance to make his girlfriend...yet!

Lots of it, so he can impress Tina Zabinski, the World’s Most Beautiful Girl, and ask her on a date. So Kevin gets creative - and his life becomes a financial comedy of errors. Does he really have what it takes to get filthy rich at age fourteen? In Gary Paulsen’s hilarious follow-up to Liar, Liar, Kevin’s schemes lead him into situations that are sweet, some that are sticky, and some that are downright stinky.

Uh…So FIVE of a kind beats FOUR of a kind?
Revisado: 08-27-16
What did you like best about this story?
Kevin Spencer is 14 going on 35 and the funniest kid character you want to meet. I am a 50+ year old female but thought this book was Laugh Out Loud funny as you hear the enterprising young Kevin and his innocent but adult savvy take on earning an "honest" living. Gary Paulsen is such a witty writer and I plan on reading the rest of The Kevin series. The book brought me back to my own childhood and all the fun dreams that I had at his age. There is nothing like a clever "Young Adult" book to keep you young at heart!
What about Joshua Swanson’s performance did you like?
He is the perfect reader for this book. His hysterical voices exactly recreate kids in the teenage years and I though I was listening to my own nieces and nephews instead of an adult.

Historia
These words, spoken to Brian Robeson, will change his life. Two years earlier, Brian was stranded alone in the wilderness for 54 days with nothing but a small hatchet. Yet he survived. Now the government wants him to go back into the wilderness so that astronauts and the military can learn the survival techniques that kept Brian alive. Soon the project backfires, though, leaving Brian with a wounded partner and a long river to navigate. His only hope is to build a raft and try to transport the injured man a hundred miles downstream to a trading post - if the map he has is accurate.

Not just for teen boys, but for ANYONE who values Life!
Revisado: 08-13-16
This sequel to The Hatchet is so well-crafted and just as suspenseful as the first book. Just like The River that Brian paddles down, this story also has many twists & turns that keeps you riveted & inside Brian's head. You truly get a sense of his angst, even if you haven't spent time in The Backcountry. If you have (as I have) you get a true sense of his desperation & struggle to acclimatize when returning home that few understand who haven't experienced the struggle. After many days in true wilderness, I remember how mesmerized I was by running tap water & lights that went on with the flip of a switch. This cognitive dissonance is what drives Brian to return and what moves the plot so beautifully.
My only gripe is that the overly dramatic music is completely unnecessary! The excellent reader is all that is needed.
This book is NOT just for teen boys, but ANYONE who appreciates The Wilderness & wants to understand what is truly important in life.
