Historia
Just three days after he was born, Howard Shulman contracted an infection that attacked his face, devouring his nose, lips, lower right eyelid, tear ducts, and palate. Abandoned at the hospital by his parents, he became a ward of New Jersey under the care of a state-employed surgeon who experimentally rebuilt his face.

I love memoir and have read too many to number and rarely write a review. This book made me laugh & cry, incredible moving story of resilience, searching for what’s missing and discovering what matters most in life. Also a wonderful story of letting go and forgiveness.

Historia
Like so many of us, award-winning writer Katy Butler always assumed her aging parents would experience healthy, active retirements before dying peacefully at home. Then her father suffered a stroke that left him incapable of easily finishing a sentence or showering without assistance. Her mother was thrust into full-time caregiving, and Katy became one of the 24 million Americans who help care for aging parents. In an effort to correct a minor and non - life threatening heart arrhythmia, doctors outfitted her father with a pacemaker.

A must read for anyone who will someday die! So, everyone can gain a deeper understanding of choices to make or will be made for you without you realizing the repercussions those choices might have.
With my 94.5 mother nearing her final years, this book could have been more prescient. Highly recommend.

Historia
We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people, one in 25, has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in 25 everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath.

Fascinating read
Revisado: 08-29-23
Different than I expected and thoroughly enjoyed. So many insights into the human condition. Fascinating to learn more deeply about having a conscience. Confirmed unfortunately more people than expected don’t have one which explains much. Why one can never understand some amoral behaviors of others, that part is just absent.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

In the years leading up to the election of Donald Trump, Congressman Adam Schiff had already been sounding the alarm over the resurgence of autocracy around the world, and the threat this posed to the United States. But as he led the probe into Donald Trump’s abuses of presidential power, Schiff came to the terrible conclusion that the principal threat to American democracy now came from within. In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years.

Epic truth telling.
Revisado: 10-18-21
Incredible reporting of a family dynasty motivated by greed for years and years. A refusal to apologize or take any responsibility for hundreds of thousand dead in their wake. Turning a blind eye to the devastation their drugs have caused. The book includes important history of the family through the century and details the influence that was gained with wealth and power. And with that power they influenced politicians and government agencies that refused to stop them. The lies and greed is shocking and despicable. The comparison to a foreign drug cartel was apt. Highly recommend this thorough and well written book.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

A fabulous investigative story regarding Elizabeth Holmes and the company she founded Theranos. Truly shows the absolute need for a free press. Despite roadblocks, threats, legal actions Carreyrou and his sources stayed on this important story and reported the truth. The incredible courage of Tyler Schultz, grandson of former Secretary of State and Theranos board member George Schultz is inspiring and gives me hope. Well done.
