Historia
Shesheshen is a shapeshifter, who happily resides as an amorphous lump at the bottom of a ruined manor. When her rest is interrupted by hunters intent on murdering her, she constructs a body using a metal chain for a backbone, borrowed bones for limbs, and a bear trap as an extra mouth. However, the hunters chase Shesheshen out of her home and off a cliff. Badly hurt, she's found and nursed back to health by Homily, a warmhearted human, who has mistaken Shesheshen as a fellow human

This story was different and wonderful
Revisado: 12-09-24
After this book - which was unlike anything I've read before - Shesheshen and Homily feel like dear friends of mine. And I love when that happens.
Carmen Rose did a fantastic job bringing me to the Isthmus and the story by John Wiswell is unique. Shesheshen as a character is super intriguing to me, The development of the relationship between Homily and Shesheshen felt realistic and romantic and refreshing. I love how it was "hot" without being "hot". (You'll see what I mean when you read it.)
As for the gore and horror - I think Wiswell did a phenomenal job dancing on the line between graphic and suggestion but never falling into either. I was neither grossed out nor frightened. Really, just entertained.
Anyone have tips on how to make the steamed egg cakes?

Revisado: 01-13-22
This is the second book I've listened to by Mr. Noor, and once again, I am enamored of his writing. The characters in A Touch of Fever are fun and the banter between all of them is super amusing. In fact, much of this book amused me, but it also kept me interested and riveted to the story.
Jackson and Xander together are hot enough to blister flesh.
Zachary Johnson does an outstanding job narrating this book.

Wow, this series is fantastic
Revisado: 09-28-21
The stakes are getting higher, and the dangers are absolutely real.
The second book in the Savage Rebellion series is non stop action and intrigue. I'm having trouble coming up with words to use that won't spoil the story, so I will just mention that I loved this book and the performance by Lameece Issaq was exquisite.
Very, VERY much looking forward to number three.

I really enjoyed this book.
Revisado: 09-17-21
This book mixes magic and feminism in a really interesting way. The characters are all pretty nuanced and interesting in their own ways, and the growth and depth of the main characters Beatrix and Peter feels believable.
Leanne Woodward does a great job narrating this book, and I'll be sure to keep an ear out for more stories read by her, including the rest of this series.

Historia
All vampires suck. Sterling just happens to be very good at it. Vainglorious vampire Sterling is forced to trade his big city hedonism for a trip to a sleepy mountain town, where mangled dead bodies have been discovered. Soon he’s entangled with snooty vampire nobles, territorial werewolves, and a society of law-enforcing sorcerers. The locals aren’t so bad, like the luscious young lady at the fruit shop, or the hunky electrician whose smile sends out sparks. But they’re distractions from the hunt for the mountain murderer.

This was tremendous fun
Revisado: 07-13-21
Well, I really enjoyed this! I am a fan of Nick Podehl, so I was interested in this from the start, but what was a bit unexpected was just how much fun this book would be. I love buddy stories, and the relationships between Sterling, Gil and Asher is no exception. Add in a ninja witch, and you've got a really enjoyable tale.
I'll be looking out for more, no doubt. And in the meantime, it seems I have a large back catalog of books from Nazri Noor to catch up on!

Slow to start, but worth it!
Revisado: 05-14-21
I struggled just a wee bit to get into this at the start, but after the first two chapters or so, I am glad I kept with it. This was a fun steampunk mystery romp that revealed tantalizing hints about the growth of the characters to come.
Karl Jenkinson did a good job narrating this story. My only comment is that at times his delivery is a bit fast, leading me to back up a few times to relisten. But I really enjoyed his storytelling otherwise.
I am looking forward to continuing the adventures of Magister, Phoebe and the professor.

Promising
Revisado: 04-20-21
This series has promise, especially if the remainder is voiced by the incredible Xe Sands who, as always, did an excellent job.
I liked what we knew of the characters, but the story itself was too low stakes for a proper mystery, in my opinion. I wasn't sold on the motivations of the antagonist (no spoilers) and wasn't really worried about the danger posed by them.
When Luella lost her job, why was there no mention of unemployment benefits? There was one mention, long after the firing, a brief passage saying the benefits would not be enough to cover much, but it was bothering me that it was just an overlooked detail that anyone fired without cause would have jumped on.
That all said, I am interested in how this story develops. Sparkle Beach sounds like a fun place to visit, and I want to learn more about how Rose, Pepper and Rafael develop.

Historia
Brielle Reyes may not have post-college life planned out like some of her friends do, but she figures she'll work for her mother's home cleaning service while job hunting. It'll work out as long as she doesn't fall in love. Her last relationship was a disaster and she has no idea where she'll be in a few weeks, let alone the rest of her life. Since the only guy in her age range she sees now on a regular basis is cantankerous if handsome client Archer Ward, she probably won't have a hard time sticking to that vow. Probably.

I am fond of this book!
Revisado: 03-21-21
I really liked this book. I'm a bit far off from the ages of these characters but I still recall being in my early twenties. I can relate to their motivations and actions pretty easily. I loved that Archer was a main character and his disability was not glossed over. the fact that it was never actually defined really didn't bother me because it doesn't quite matter. I don't need to know why he's disabled. just like a real life person, a disability should not define somebody.
I think Susan Marlow did a great job. The distinct voices she gave to each character were easily identifiable, and I think she brought a nice amount of emotion to each scene.
I received a code for this audiobook in exchange for my honest and fair review. This did not impact my opinion on this book.

Cliffhanger
Revisado: 02-19-21
I wasn't prepared for the ending! It was rather abrupt...
That said, I didn't mind the plot of this installment like others did. I think Richter had some good character growth, in addition to his stat and ability growth. The introspection and self evaluation he was basically forced to face in lieu of interactions with other characters was actually a breath of fresh air, so to speak. (The poonado chapter will certainly blow any fresh out right out....I'm a middle aged woman with the sense of humor of a teenaged boy, so I didn't mind the poopie talk at all. I laughed harder than I should have.)
Anyway, Nick Podelh and Dr. Kong have entertained the hell out me again, so well done.
Now, what the f was that chaos energy?? I NEED TO KNOW.

Very enjoyable book with unexpected warmth
Revisado: 02-09-21
I wasn't sure exactly what to expect from this book, to be frank. The description was enough to pique my interest, and enough to know this was going to be a bit dark, but I didn't expect to become so immersed in the Lost Falls world.
The characters showed sufficient growth and depth for a first book in a series for me; the reveal of Ozzy's motivations driving him to help, even when the job wasn't promising to be financially rewarding was well done. Not too much held back, but not an infodump either. The relationships between Ozzy and the supporting characters (even "Lawrence"!) were touching and realistic.
Gary Bennet's smooth narration was perfect. He did an excellent job and I was able to understand who was speaking when there was dialogue and what was internal. I'll certainly be likely to listen to more works by both gentlemen.
