In this enthralling narrative in the tradition of Candice Millard and David Grann, Matthew Pearl unearths a forgotten and dramatic series of events from early in the Revolutionary War that opens a window into America’s transition from colony to nation, with the heavy moral costs incurred amid shocking new alliances and betrayals.

Enthralling story for any amateur historian
Revisado: 11-28-23
The kidnap happens so early in the book that it originally left me wondering what could be next, but what happens after IS the story. While at times the timeline jumps can be confusing, there thankfully are not many. Overall a great read!

As a casual space enthusiast, I can say that this book was the perfect amount of technical and entertaining. I learned a lot about the companies and the general direction of the industry.

From two former military officers and award-winning authors comes a chillingly authentic geopolitical thriller that imagines a naval clash between the US and China in the South China Sea in 2034 - and the path from there to a nightmarish global conflagration.

Great concept but disappointed by rushed ending
Revisado: 09-24-21
I picked this up on the recommendation of David Freidberg of the All In podcast, but I found it lacking. I have read a few WW3 scenarios novels and that probably taints my opinion a bit. This one felt like it couldn’t decide if the characters or the scenario was more important, while completely skipping over any of the significant drama.
In short, if you want better prognostications read anything by George Friedman, if you want better WW3 dramatization I would recommend Ghost Fleet by PW Singer.
Lastly, the author interview at end of this audiobook was worth while and probably added a star to the review. In it, the author states the overall mission is to provide a plausible scenario to combat a potentially catastrophic “failure of imagination”. I wholeheartedly agree with him, we need to be taking these scenarios a bit more serious.

Was it what I wanted?
Revisado: 03-04-21
I didn’t really have expectations, but this didn’t meet them. I enjoyed it, but can’t say that I learned anything exciting or new. Maybe it was just my personal headspace over the last few days or maybe it would of been better to get a physical copy and take it slow. Not sure. I guess if you are completely new to this topic this is a good read. I follow green energy mostly on the investment side and nothing struck me as fresh info here, though I’m probably also not the target audience.

I’m not sure that I have ever read a more consequential book in my life for me or my family. To be sure though, check back with me in 10 years or so.
