Historia
In this masterwork of an authentic spirit person (Thomas Berry), Buddhist teacher and anthropologist Joan Halifax Roshi delves into the fruitful darkness - the shadow side of being, found in the root truths of Native religions, the fecundity of nature, and the stillness of meditation. In this highly personal and insightful odyssey of the heart and mind, she encounters Tibetan Buddhist meditators, Mexican shamans, and Native American elders, among others.

Couldn’t listen to narrator
Revisado: 12-22-24
I was very excited about this book, but I should have heeded others’ comments about the narrator. She would probably be excellent on stage in theater, but i couldn’t follow the content of the book with her dramatized speech. I just got the paperback and it’s EXCELLENT, so if the book appeals please don’t use Audible for this one, skip to the hard copy.

Historia
In this modern spiritual classic, the Tibetan meditation master Chögyam Trungpa highlights the commonest pitfall to which every aspirant on the spiritual path falls prey: what he calls spiritual materialism. The universal tendency, he shows, is to see spirituality as a process of self-improvement - the impulse to develop and refine the ego when the ego is, by nature, essentially empty. "The problem is that ego can convert anything to its own use," he said, "even spirituality."

One to revisit
Revisado: 03-12-23
I read this a few years ago and got something out of it though a lot was also over my head at that time. Now re-reading it gave me so much more. It’s a book to keep revisiting along your path. (And the narrator is excellent, very clear pleasant voice)

Historia
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

I found this very wise in its simplicity and directness. It felt the “how to” manual for so many snags and barriers creatives regularly face (here’s the voice of a good mentor).

Revisado: 12-21-21
Loved this. Written later in RD’s life it’s a beautiful synthesis of his matured teachings. Yes, the narrator mispronounces literally every name and Sanskrit word, but I got used to it.

Through teaching stories, true accounts, eye-opening revelations, and his one-of-a-kind sense of humor, this legendary teacher helps show us the way out of the prison of our self-identity - and into the joy of being at once “nobody” and the universal divine at play in the world.

Historia
Scholars have learned a lot more about the history of yoga in recent years, but their research can be hard to track down. Although their work is insightful, it is aimed more at specialists than at a general audience. The Truth of Yoga draws on many of their findings, presented in a format designed for practitioners. The aim is to highlight ideas on which listeners can draw to keep traditions alive in the 21st century.

Excellent overview of yoga
Revisado: 02-23-21
Very hard to do - to cover “all” of yoga - but the author does a very nice job of balancing depth with content. While not simple material, I’d say this is one of the more accessible books in yoga (and perhaps the only book I know of that covers yoga in such breadth).

Historia
If you think that you have to retreat to a cave in the Himalayas to find the enlightenment that yoga promises, think again. In this second edition of Living Your Yoga, Judith Hanson Lasater stretches the meaning of yoga beyond its familiar poses and breathing techniques to include the events of daily life - all of them - as ways to practice. Using the time-honored wisdom of the Yoga Sutra and the Bhagavad Gita to steer the course, she serves up off-the-mat practices to guide you in deepening your relationships with yourself, your family and friends, and the world around you.

Almost offensively diluted (VERY basic)
Revisado: 12-20-20
I can’t get behind this at all. I think Dr Lasater has depth of yogic knowledge, however this book is so diluted and represents ignorant modern manipulation of yoga (which I can only assume is intentionally done to make it an easy entry point for individuals new to yoga, and I can forgive it for such, but that intention should be more clearly stated). It’s based on a flawed misrepresentation that yoga is primarily a physical practice, and presents the idea of daily spiritual life (“off the mat”) as being novel. If you are brand new to yoga, I expect this is a great and perhaps inspiring launch point, but please please know that this book involves gross oversight/manipulation in order to make it “relatable.” I think a title change “A Beginner’s Guide to Living Yoga” would do wonders.

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

Wore me out, couldn’t finish
Revisado: 08-22-20
I enjoyed the beginning & had optimism for it be a book I’d enjoy, but I couldn’t even finish it. The message is the same throughout - I kept waiting for more depth that never emerged. And, for myself the tone landed as preachy and snarky, and felt like a long list of complaints that wore me out; it has an edge of anger vs coming from wisdom (which is ironic, bc in the book she makes the point that disgust is still unresolved attachment to an ideal). At times I enjoyed her use of language and metaphor. I am sure many will love it, it just wasn’t for me.
