Historia
Werther, a sensitive young artist, finds himself in Wahlheim, a quiet, attractive village in Germany where he seeks solace from the turmoils of love. It is a young spring, and he hopes that arcadian solitude will prove a genial balm to his mind. But his romantic tendency rules otherwise, and he falls in love with Charlotte - Lotte - even though he knows she is affianced to another.

A tragic story well told
Revisado: 03-25-24
This translation of WERTHER is close the the early 19th century translation but altered slightly to be more modern and readable.

Marvelous creations, including a short story set in the world of The Matrix and others set in the worlds of gothic fiction and children's fiction, can be found in this extraordinary collection, which showcases Gaiman's storytelling brilliance as well as his entertaining (and dark) sense of humor.

Mostly beautiful, mostly melancholy collection
Revisado: 02-10-24
From the faux-Sherlock of alt-universe “A Study in Emerald” to the in-universe AMERICAN GODS sequel “Monarch of the Glen” this book carries the reader many fun (and dark) places. My favorite is probably “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” which, like several of the stories, shows teen angst to be well-founded.
Gaiman’s delivery of his own words is perfection.

Historia
When Emily Lane isn’t busy running her charming Christmas-themed store, “Under the Mistletoe”, located in the quaint tourist town of Fletcher’s Grove, she finds herself compelled to investigate not so quaint local murders. On the surface, Emily is a perfectly lovely, good-natured puzzle-solver and mystery lover. But she is hiding a secret past from everyone in town. And when Emily begins her personal investigations, Detective-Constable Sam Wilner, a smart and attractive cop—with a crush on Emily that is not completely unrequited—begins to wonder if there’s more to Emily than meets the eye.

Fun!
Revisado: 12-16-23
This series of mysteries (seasons 1 & 2) was fun, smart, charmingly written and delightfully performed. The acting was great but sound design was outstanding!
The solutions to each hour-long mystery story are not very complicated to figure out so if you’re looking for complexity, this may not be for you. This is also true if you hate Christmas (and puns about Christmas).

Jordan Baker grows up in the most rarefied circles of 1920s American society - she has money, education, a killer golf handicap, and invitations to some of the most exclusive parties of the Jazz Age. She’s also queer and Asian, a Vietnamese adoptee treated as an exotic attraction by her peers, while the most important doors remain closed to her. But the world is full of wonders: infernal pacts and dazzling illusions, lost ghosts and elemental mysteries. In all paper is fire, and Jordan can burn the cut paper heart out of a man. She just has to learn how.

Shaking up GATSBY
Revisado: 11-05-23
This is a fun story, well told.
it’s the story of TGG as told by Jordan Baker who, here, is a queer Vietnamese adoptee. Oh, and there are “Wizards” of all sorts. The reading is lovely and we’ll-paced but occasionally the male characters are hard to distinguish from one another.

Historia
New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

Dark and Heartbreaking
Revisado: 10-20-23
After reading BETWEEN TWO FIRES, I wanted to try another book by Mr. Buehlman. This book about vampires in 1970s New York has great characters and a twisted plot. The recording by the author himself really brings the characters to life.

Terribly abridged
Revisado: 07-04-23
I was excited to read this book and to listen to the wonderful Boyd Gaines read it, but the cutting was so jarring that I ended up just reading the book itself. The editor seemed to cut out descriptions of the possible suspects motivations and the “sins” committed by the victims - what make a mystery story tick. They even left out the chapter that gave the reader the ultimate insight into the, by then revealed, murderer’s brain.

Historia
A thoroughly modern tale of politics, spin-doctoring, and media manipulation. As the harsh wind holds the Greek fleet trapped in the straits at Aulis, frustration and political impotence turn into a desire for the blood of a young and innocent woman - blood that will appease the gods and allow the troops to set sail. And when Iphigeneia, Agamemnon's beloved daughter, is brought to the coast under false pretences, it looks as if the ships will soon be on their way.

Historia
When the body of a suicide victim disappears at West Point Military Academy in 1831, only to be discovered hours later missing its heart, the Academy calls on retired detective Gus Landor to investigate. Landor is something of a legend among his peers, noted for an uncanny, Holmesian ability to read people. When Edgar Allan Poe, a new cadet, comes forth with his own cryptic conclusion—that the man Landor is looking for is a poet—Landor is intrigued and enlists Poe as his assistant.
