Historia
Eighty-nine-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a big favor to ask her hairdresser, Dorrie. She wants the black single mother to drop everything and drive her from Texas to a funeral in Ohio - tomorrow. Dorrie, fleeing problems of her own and curious about Isabelle’s past, agrees, not knowing it will be a journey that changes both their lives. Isabelle confesses that, as a teen in 1930s Kentucky, she fell in love with Robert Prewitt, a would-be doctor and the black son of her family’s housekeeper - in a town where blacks weren’t allowed after dark. The tale of their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences just might help Dorrie find her own way.

Revisado: 05-17-24
I started this one months ago and after not being able to get into it I went on to something else. I went back a few days ago and this time was almost immediately drawn in. I'm so glad I did as it was one of those that I had a hard time putting aside. loved the story!

Not fan of Collin
Revisado: 03-19-24
the way Collin treats P is deplorable and she keeps coming back for more. Two insecure people who are clearly toxic for each other. the other books have been so much better.

Historia
Like millions of her millennial peers, Rachel Held Evans didn't want to go to church anymore. The hypocrisy, the politics, the gargantuan building budgets, the scandals - church culture seemed so far removed from Jesus. Yet despite her cynicism and misgivings, something kept drawing her back. And so she set out on a journey to understand the Church and to find her place in it.

What a fantastic book! she expressed how I have been feeling for years so well! I was so saddened to learn that she had tragically passed away. Her insights were brilliant.

Owen Foster has never wanted for anything. Then his mother shows up at his elite New Orleans boarding school cradling a bombshell: his privileged life has been funded by stolen money. After using the family business, the single largest employer in his small Louisiana town, to embezzle millions and drain the employees' retirement accounts, Owen's father vanished without a trace, leaving Owen and his mother to deal with the fallout. Owen returns to Lake Cane to finish his senior year, where people he hardly remembers despise him for his father's crimes.

Desperately needs a new narrator
Revisado: 03-29-22
The story was ok but narration was horrible. The voice was too mature for teenagers and overly dramatic. I think he was trying to achieve an accent but it was so annoying I kept increasing the speed to minimize the effect. It was sadly distracting from the story.

Historia
Richard Papen had never been to New England before his 19th year. Yet as Richard was accepted and drawn into their inner circle, he learned a terrifying secret that bound them to one another...a secret about an incident in the woods in the dead of night where an ancient rite was brough to brutal life...and lead to a gruesome death.

I tried...between the narration which got on my nerves continuously and the plot which evolved at a dreadfully slow pace this was a painful attempt. I stopped about halfway through with no regrets.

much better than reviews
Revisado: 01-24-22
before reading the reviews I scanned basically said this book was nothing more than a YA book. Those readers really missed out on the complex relationships, the personalities, and the decisions of the times. While it isn't in my top 5 all time faves it kept me engaged throughout.

I can't believe I didn't read this earlier
Revisado: 10-16-21
Loved this! Certainly one of the better WWII historical fiction books I've read even if it doesn't go into the same genre as most. It grabbed me and held my heart as this young lady both matured and understood the extent of the war. Losing her families both old and new...all of it was beautiful.

Not sure why she gave it this title when it really was more about her bipolar disorder, PTSD, addiction and subsequent electroshock therapy. That said it is a good book and interesting read.

Amazing yet Tragic
Revisado: 07-19-21
This book should be required for anyone who ever interacts with someone who has substances use disorder. It is so easy to overlook that there is a real person behind the "mess" and forget to look for the trauma that is the root of it thinking that the person is just lazy or just doesn't want to do the work. Many times the solutions that are created are the exact opposite of what is needed and they are created by people who have no idea what they are doing but would never admit that. Such a powerful story if you let it.
