I was a fan even before I started this listen because I had already listened to Skunk Works by Ben Rich and Leo Janos. I'm a retired engineer and have limitless admiration and awe for what Lockheed, Kelly Johnson, and the Skunk Works achieved between the mid 1930 and 2000. Kelly was also surprisingly modest and constantly shared credit with his team throughout the book. It's a short book, but you won't be disappointed if you have any interest in military aircraft.

No good deed goes unpunished. That’s the one thing Brace Cordova is convinced of when he’s released from a five-year stretch in a military prison. He figures the best he can do is spend the rest of his days as a freighter pilot and vicariously live out his dream of a Commonwealth Fleet career through his cousin, Commander Letessa Cordova. His plans unravel when he's accosted by gangsters, rescued by smugglers, and swept up in the search for an ancient Earth relic. Brace soon realizes he might not live long enough to ever get a taste of the quiet life.

Fun and Easy Listen
Revisado: 06-21-24
If you enjoyed Starwars and Firefly, then you'll likely enjoy this listen. It's a great summer listen. If you thought the dialog in Startwars was childish at best (even before the Ewoks and JarJar Binks) or the western dialog in Firefly was anacronistic, then this may not be the book for you. Entertaining - Yes. Edgy science fiction - No. I listened to this while I was building cabinents for my home, and I could enjoy the book without being distracted by a more dense story. I think it's worth your time.

Historia
Seventy years ago, more than 6000 Allied ships carried more than a million soldiers across the English Channel to a 50-mile-wide strip of the Normandy coast in German-occupied France. It was the greatest sea-borne assault in human history. The code names given to the beaches where the ships landed the soldiers have become immortal: Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah, and especially Omaha, the scene of almost unimaginable human tragedy.

Best book I read/listened having anything to do with D-Day. Other books will tell you the story. This book told the story warts and all. And the warts were often the most interesting parts. I highly recommend this book if you have any interest in the D-Day landings on the French coast.

Enjoyed It From Start to Finish
Revisado: 12-30-22
I find myself struggling with star-review inflation. So, I gave this a 4-star rating not because I didn't really enjoy it, because I did. I just think 5-stars should be reserved for that really special listen, and Audible doesn't have a 4.5 star category. Lorelei King is one of my favorite readers, and she was the perfect choice for this book. I'm really enjoying the show on Amazon with the same name and based on this book, but the resemblance is only on the surface. This book and the show are completely different versions of the same very clever idea. It's my first introduction to William Gibson, and I'm enough of a fan to get another book. Give this one a chance, and you won't be disappointed.

Fascinating Medieval Character
Revisado: 02-25-21
Working with what information exists today, this books tells a very engaging story of an important English knight from the 12th and 13th centuries. Alive during Henry II, battled with Richard the Lionheart, and championed the cause (unfortunately) of King John's son Henry III. The books stays true to the facts, so you have to read between the lines to appreciate the Court intrigue that had to be understood and negotiated during the reign of King John. I really enjoyed this book, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great medieval story.

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

Everyone Should Read This Book
Revisado: 02-25-21
Spoiler, I was a proud Republican until the day Trump was elected. That's said, not everything Trump did was incompetent. At least when Trump hired Bolton, he hired someone with the courage of their convictions. John Bolton is without question an arrogant ass, and his default position is that if someone disagrees with him, they must be wrong not him. But the story he tells is beyond amazing (not in a good way), and I think this is absolutely the kind of information that desperately needs to be in the public domain. Bolton could possibly have been more effective if he could see shades of gray. The book is unnecessarily disrespectful to people he disagreed with, especially Obama and the Democratic leadership. And really, who repeatedly refers to themselves as 'yours truly' when they are telling a story about themselves. But again, he was in the room where it happened, and reading this book was highly valuable.

In 1942, America's deadliest fighter pilot, or "ace of aces" - the legendary Eddie Rickenbacker - offered a bottle of bourbon to the first US fighter pilot to break his record of 26 enemy planes shot down. Seizing on the challenge to motivate his men, General George Kenney promoted what they would come to call the "race of aces" as a way of boosting the spirits of his war-weary command.

Truly Engaging Story
Revisado: 02-04-21
There will never be another event like this in history. These men, the Aces of the South Pacific during WWII, got to live the life only dreamed about by videogame enthusiasts. The book focus on five men, but provides the full backstory of their lives and what they had to endure during the last 3 or 4 years of the war. The backstories of the men are almost as interesting and the events that made them famous. This book is anything but boring, and tells an amazing story.
