Historia
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

Fantastic story, amazing narration
Revisado: 03-14-24
non trope based. amazing story about a different type of character hanging on to things as the world falls apart around the few human theater left. A coward who never becomes the sword master yet still manages to make things happen in small ways as the crazy events of the world occur non-stop.

Historia
What won't we try in our quest for perfect health, beauty, and the fountain of youth? Well, just imagine a time when doctors prescribed morphine for crying infants. When liquefied gold was touted as immortality in a glass. And when strychnine - yes, that strychnine, the one used in rat poison - was dosed like Viagra. Looking back with fascination, horror, and not a little dash of dark, knowing humor, Quackery recounts the lively, at times unbelievable, history of medical misfires and malpractices.

I'm grateful to life in the modern world
Revisado: 01-19-21
More than any other book Quackery made me very thankful to be alive now and not at some point in the past. We can glamorize bygone eras, but the idea of having hemorrhoids burned off with a red-hot piece of metal is all you need to know to realize it's better to be alive now than it was then. Fantastic book - very entertaining and very informative.

I love Dan Simmons but this book is too dark
Revisado: 10-27-20
Dan Simmons is actually one of my favorite authors but I didn't finish this book. Spoiler Alert: It's all fine and written well but about 2/3rds of the way through the only competent 'good' character has his throat unceremoniously slashed and dies. The remaining characters were not interesting enough for me to finish this book. Dark stuff

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

HAREM Novel & women beating up men all over
Revisado: 07-03-20
Narration of this series is done very well, but is a teenage 'Ready Player One' style that really demonstrates this is intended for a teen/male fantasy sort of market. I can deal with that, and I'm fine with the male fantasy stuff except for two parts in these books:
1. I can't stand Kvothe talking about sex. In that teen style narrator voice is it gross. There are so many gross thoughts about sex and discussions about it. They are not sexy thoughts or discussions - just stupid and ridiculous.
2. I'm so tired of women beating up men with zero effort in fiction books. Are they not the same human race? I don't care about training, a 10 year old girl CANNOT easily and repeatedly beat down a healthy 17 year old boy. I don't care if she has trained since she could walk. The difference in strength would invalidate 75% of any training. Little hint about grappling, jujitsu, judo and every other fighting style: strength actually does matter. Your technique can actually be very good and still fail against an opponent who is strong enough.
If you said these characters weren't human, but some similar race where the females are as big and tough as the males, then it would be fine, but please don't call them normal humans, and then talk about combat situations that don't match up with anything I've ever seen in my entire life. The characters might as well just fly around with no explanation as that would be equally comprehensible to me.

Very interesting, sometimes awesome, sad ending
Revisado: 03-06-20
If this trilogy would have had a happier ending I would have loved it. However, it ended up making me feel pretty down for a few days. The books have some very interesting ideas that are not in any other fantasy series. The unique nature of the story make the books worth listening too, but a slightly different ending would have made this into a mild disappointment into one of my favorite series of all time.
It isn't because the book is all grim - it isn't Joe Abercrombie...I love those books and they aren't happy. It's just that in this series, the two most earnest and well-wishing characters are the only important ones to die at the end.

Sometimes great, others painful, others porn
Revisado: 02-26-19
Great story - way too much porn IMHO. I'm all about sex in fantasy novels - it's great when they are adult and people act like real people, but these books have 30+ minute sex scenes, repeatedly. Now I have all new perspectives on the words: entrance, tunnel and flower...among others I'm sure.
The female narrator was a very poor choice for this book as well. Nadea is already overly emotional and somewhat conceited to other characters by my reckoning, and the female narrator amplifies those qualities many times. She comes across as cynical and hateful to my ears.
Back to the story, if you can wade through all of the other stuff, it has great moments, but there is a lot to get through for these brief sparks of light. Also, there are no happy endings so far in these books so don't expect heroic rescues or happy conclusions.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.
