Investigative journalism at it’s finest
Revisado: 10-23-24
As I’m sure many others have, I’ve seen the productions on Netflix and Hulu that reference the Sackler story. But neither holds a candle to the deep dive done by this writer. He tells the in depth story of personal and business behaviors and advertising tactics this family - repeatedly employed over 3 generations - to move their various pharmaceutical products - without regard to human health or lives.
Staggering that the opioids crisis was in effect a long con: perpetrated by this Sackler family of medical doctors (and complicit parties at the FDA) against their nationwide target: the entirety of medical doctors in our country, A con the Sacklers were quite proud to have pulled off!
Very impressive that this writer had the courage and tenacity to deep dive into this tragedy after so many before him had tried and failed to get the entirety of the story revealed to a suffering public. Stellar job!
Afterthought: Following the 2024 Supreme Court’s ruling against the “bankruptcy settlement” with the participating states, what recourse do the victims/families have left? Civil cases against the Sacklers?

Historia
AD 381. Five years have gone by since a Roman governor ordered the deaths of a Gothic king and his attendants at a feast in their honor. This disastrous act led to warfare in the Roman Empire and the death of the Emperor Valens. The Empire is now at peace, but the powerful brother of the murdered king has sworn revenge on the regicides, and will not rest until they are hunted down. For the eight legionaries who carried out the killings, the bloodshed is only just beginning.

Historia
Should leaders be feared or loved? Can dictators give rise to democracy? Should rulers have morals or wear them like a mask? Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince puts forth unsettling questions like these, whose answers redefined centuries of political wisdom. But what does it really mean to be Machiavellian? These 24 lectures are more than just a close reading of one of the great books of Western history.

I found this to be really interesting. The presenter does a great job of unfolding Machiavelli's story in detail, context, and time period. A pleasure to listen to.

Historia
From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head.

Great boo, abrupt ending...

Was a little disappointed at how the book just abruptly ended. Chris Kyle was an extraordinary individual.

Revisado: 11-26-23
I really like this series. Very well written, everything ties together nicely, and most of these stories make me want to listen straight through. But compared to the other books in this series, I found this one not as compelling. Probably just me.
