Foundational and technically excellent
Revisado: 12-21-24
This book seems like it should be amazing, it consistently improved through the telling, but it's mostly missing an ephemeral quality that would add a charged excitement to the story. It's read but somehow not experienced? The book ends well and I will read the next, hoping that it continues to improve and picks up the quality that glimmered at a few points but did not take hold.

Less impressed by Book 2
Revisado: 06-03-24
My general impression is that this one started well but wasn't as good as the first.
The narrator is great, but this book seemed to need more than the variety of voices he has in his in his repertoire. It truck my several times by the end that characters felt the same or didn't match their descriptions.
Spoilers ahead
The story started off quite well. By the end the main character went from enormously exceptional to godlike with no clearly understood limits. The power level concept stalled out, and stopped having much meaning. There were no apparent capacity it endurance limits except one time when the author suddenly said that literally everyone was tired and slowed down. then the main character kept going constantly at full power. Same thing for his knowledge and decision making, he went from exceptional but still making mistakes in the first book to being flawless by the end of the second. It also felt like some of the bad guys got the same irrational boosts to do just the right things and time things perfectly though it made little sense outside of the naratives obvious plot points where things had to go wrong on certain beats.
I'll continue the series because of the 1.5 books, and because I already bought the 4th on sale. Crossing my fingers.

Was it written in a different language?
Revisado: 05-11-23
Decent litrpg, but the text had some awkward grammatical patterns and a lot of word repetition, like: It was intriguing in a way that left him intrigued or, The trip exhausted him. Going up and down the hills was exhausting. It makes me wonder if it was written in a different language.

Why are so many characters voices as comic relief?
Revisado: 05-04-22
I love Luke Daniels, and was excited to read this addition to Kevin Hearne's series. However, it struck me that many of the characters were voiced in an exaggerated comedic way that more resembled Oberton than Atticus. I think it was the delivery that went over the top not the language.

Fun, but unbalanced
Revisado: 03-28-22
I enjoyed this book and would like to read more. However, there are some flaws that I'd like to see fixed. Possible spoilers: In the (currently 8) books of The Land, Aleron does a good job establishing and respecting the limits of his characters. In this book, its mostly good, but goes off the rails in the final battle. The battle suddenly includes a whole slew of high tier abilities that don't really make sense. They either need to be better established, or toned down. There's little room for growth. There's a level 2 character that can't miss among other unexplained perks, and a level 3 that's suddenly able to do acrobatic wire work and fight a horde in their own, while another character decided not to level up until mid battle for no apparent reason and with massive consequences. Overall, it felt like the outcomes were disconnected from the characters and their abilities, so anything could have happened and it didn't seem meaningful.

Historia
Our favorite white trash zombie, Angel Crawford, has enough problems of her own, what with dealing with her alcoholic, deadbeat dad, issues with her not-quite boyfriend, the zombie mafia, industrial espionage, and evil corporations. Oh, and it’s raining, and won’t let up. But things get even crazier when a zombie movie starts filming in town, and Angel begins to suspect that it’s not just the plot of the movie that's rotten. Soon she's fighting her way through mud, blood, bullets, and intrigue, even as zombies, both real and fake, prowl the streets.

Great, but did the talent record with a head cold?
Revisado: 12-04-21
I really enjoy this series, and the voice acting is really good, but a substantial portion of this book (maybe a few hours) sounded like the voice actor had a head cold. At first I thought it was just one character, an intentional choice to give them a nasal voice (and it may have been only one character at first) but after a while they all sounded that way. It drove me nuts and really broke immersion until it stopped.

The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity - and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she'd rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in professional ballroom dance. Sounds pretty simple, right?

Tell not show
Revisado: 05-04-21
The author undermines the main character by trying too hard to tell you she's a bad ass, and the voice actor is talented but doesn't sell the character's experience and trauma. It's still fun, but I wouldn't have finished it without a glowing recommendation for the series as a whole.

55+ hours... oh, it's over?
Revisado: 12-25-20
This is a great continuation of the series. I didn't really enjoy many of the flashbacks, but those were a relatively small part of the book, and even after nearly 60 hours, I'm eager for the next book. I'm also looking forward to the future that the series had been foreshadowing. SPOILER: Are we going to get a Cosmere crossover/team up series? /SPOILER
