Historia
Only the Clothes on Her Back uncovers practices, commonly known then, but now long forgotten, which made textiles - clothing, cloth, bedding, and accessories, such as shoes and hats - a unique form of property that people without rights could own and exchange. The value of textiles depended on law, and it was law that turned these goods into a secure form of property for marginalized people, who not only used these textiles as currency, credit, and capital, but also as entree into the new republic's economy and governing institutions.

Love it, can't wait for Authors next book!
Revisado: 04-26-23
I loved this book so much! The reader could be a little dry sometimes, I got the feeling that sometimes the author was trying to convey wry humor that didn't always come through. But, sometimes, there is just no way to make a book about property law interesting to read out loud. Overall, I would (and have) recommended this book to friends.

What happened to Dan?
Revisado: 03-07-23
Wow. What happened to Dan in this episode? Normally, he asks really great questions and pushes back a little against establishment ideas. But when his guests talk about how no one is forcing people to work at Noma and they shouldn't complain about not getting paid, he doesn't push back at all. Instead, he waited to do a voice over to address the inequality inherent in unpaid internships. This whole episode seemed like another "millennials are ruining this industry" piece that is really disappointing. At no point does anyone address that people probably aren't going to these restaurants because we can't afford our rent, let alone a 900$ meal. For the record Vivian, I don't prefer counter service, I just can't afford to participate in your "dining room experience". And no one is forcing you to serve flat bread that takes 3 days and 8 people to make.

Historia
In Catherine Lowell's smart and original debut novel, the only remaining descendant of the Brontë family embarks on a modern-day literary scavenger hunt to find the family's long-rumored secret estate, using only the clues her eccentric father left behind and the Brontës' own novels. Samantha Whipple is used to stirring up speculation wherever she goes. Since her father's untimely death, she is the presumed heir to a long-rumored trove of diaries, paintings, letters, and early novel drafts.

Ooof. Undergraduate day dream
Revisado: 07-26-22
Perfect for any undergrad who has dreamed of their prof falling in love with them. I don't know that I buy the premise that a bevy of reporters and the general public are so invested in the Bronte family that they would hound the last Bronte descendant.. But then again, maybe I'm wrong. The whole story just seemed a little too far fetched.

Rich white lady complains about being less rich.
Revisado: 04-10-21
Gets a lot of knitting terms wrong, the author complains about being poor but goes on round the world trip while being "poor". I don't mind an author talking about how knitting helped them through a tough time but constantly complaining about how she has no money while she writes from her lake house and then goes on a round the world trip seems pretty tone deaf in 2020. It also perpetuates that knitting is for rich white women. Couldn't finish because I got so annoyed with the authors total lack of recognition of her privilege. The narrator isn't my favorite either, for some reason her "Italian" accent sounds Eastern European.
