Classic storytelling
Revisado: 06-06-24
I like this volume better than Heroes as I think the story flows better. If you read or listened to the other two you should be familiar with the author’s style and approach and probably like it or don’t. I enjoy it and find it makes a for a good audiobook. Given the place of this story in Western culture, I found this a helpful and entertaining rendition.

Historia
Something is wrong. We all know it. American life expectancy is declining for a third straight year. Birth rates are dropping. Nearly half of us think the other political party isn’t just wrong; they’re evil. We’re the richest country in history, but we’ve never been more pessimistic. What’s causing the despair? In Them, bestselling author and U.S. senator Ben Sasse argues that, contrary to conventional wisdom, our crisis isn’t really about politics. It’s that we’re so lonely we can’t see straight—and it bubbles out as anger. Local communities are collapsing.

Hard but important
Revisado: 11-27-18
I am a fan of Ben Sasse, but even if you are not I think you will find the issues he raises important and worth thinking about. The solutions are not easy but important things rarely are. But building community and relationships is critical if we are to avoid cultural and civic collapse. Listen to this book and argue with it passionately but don’t ignore it because Sasse has an R next to his name or he isn’t in your tribe.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Not sure there is anything better than Neil Gaiman reading his own work. Reimagined Norse mythology makes all the better. Gaiman or mythology fans will want to add this to their collection. Story telling at its finest.

In a fading town, far from anyone he knew or trusted, a young Lemony Snicket began his apprenticeship in an organization nobody knows about. He started by asking questions that shouldn't have been on his mind. Now he has written an account that should not be published, in four volumes that shouldn't be read. This is the first volume.

Historia
In The Great Debate, Yuval Levin explores the origins of the Left-Right divide by examining the views of the men who best represented each side of that debate at its outset: Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine. In a groundbreaking exploration of the roots of our political order, Levin shows that American partisanship originated in the debates over the French Revolution, fueled by the fiery rhetoric of these ideological titans.

an argument within liberalism?
Revisado: 04-30-16
A fascinating and thought-provoking exploration of two giants of the modern age. a book with much more relevance for the politics of today than you might think. Burke and Payne may be the for bearers of left and right but they are also arguing about what type of liberalism is best. Levin basically argues that the right needs more Burke and the left could use more Payne.

September has been crowned queen of Fairyland, but the kingdom is in chaos. The magic of a dodo egg has brought every king, queen, and marquess of Fairyland back to life, all with claims to the throne and their own plots and histories. In order to make sense of it all, and to save their friend from a job she doesn't want, A-Through-L and Saturday devise a Royal Race, a Monarchical Marathon, in which every would-be ruler will chase the Stoat of Arms across the nation, and the first to seize the poor beast will be crowned.

Historia
A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism. After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Führer and was hanged in Flossenbürg concentration camp at age thirty-nine. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the twentieth century.

Wow, I really wish I would have listened/read this earlier. Powerful and thought provoking. I can't recommend this enough. A reminder of the evil of Hitler and the power of faith and action even in the darkest of times.
