Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Loved it

I really like the snark and tone of this piece. And the plot was fun! Great sci-fi mixed with an almost Kafka-esque absurdity and creativity.

Love the themes
Revisado: 01-03-25
I do like the first 2/3 of these stories more than the last, as it’s a bit more dark. Though Wendig does have a beautiful way with words, so his poetic prose masks the pain and makes it palatable after all.

Historia
The only favor the aliens do for Clint Beecham when they abduct him is give him a shirt that says "Do Not Eat" on it in their language. He’s told that as a physicist, he is to be reserved, along with five other scientists, for a mysterious purpose. But 50,000 other humans on board the interstellar scout ship are scheduled to be butchered and frozen, a food supply for the long journey to the alien homeworld. Clint and the other Reserves can’t stand by and let that happen.

A little gory but great writing and humor
Revisado: 04-23-24
A little gory and Eldridge horror at times but I like the writing, plot, character development and sense of humor. Good stuff overall, if you can handle the at times disturbing gore and cynical view of the worst of humanity.

Historia
Steve doesn’t know who he is. Or who he was. He doesn’t know anything, actually. Not even where he is. Other than a vast open field of dirt. All Steve knows is that he’s apparently supposed to build a farm. At least that’s his only workable assumption. Given the number of farm-tools left to him. That and the massive number of sacks full of seeds. Unfortunately, this isn’t even the strangest part of this new life. Hidden inside the farm tools, Steve finds messages. Messages that appear in floating windows in front of him.

Not a fan of the main characters POV
Revisado: 06-12-23
Not a fan of the teenage boy fantasy / harem mentality and casual violence disconnected from emotional maturity. Other than that, I like the storyline well enough and the world building. The mixed humanoids and political storyline are intriguing. So- mixed review here.

Historia
The Yellowstone super-eruption has put an end to modern civilization. As cities and countries continue to fall, the colony of Rivendell in the alternate Earth known as Outland looks more and more like the only real hope for humanity. But life in Rivendell isn’t getting any simpler, either. Bill and Kevin continue to discover new worlds; the population continues to rise; winter is approaching; and everyone has their own opinion about how things should be run.

Loved the story & characters
Revisado: 02-18-23
Some say the politics ruined the story. I dunno, the politics seemed realistic enough with right wing extremists & trolls attempting to sublimate everyone under the guise of paternalistic patriarchy and xenophobic hate. Perhaps that’s the problem. People maybe want more fantasy without the dystopic narratives that are sadly too close to our recent history.

It turns out that surviving the depths of the labyrinth and helping stop a coup both tend to attract notice. If Hugh had his way, he'd happily go back to being just another anonymous student. He has more than enough to deal with already as he starts his second year, between his crushing load of schoolwork, training as a prospective candidate to the Librarians Errant, and navigating a long distance relationship.

Decent YA story w predictable accents
Revisado: 09-28-22
I like the overall story and characters in this novel and series. One problem I do have is the representation of the BBEG as someone clearly of middle eastern origin, given the accent. While the UK regions represented had fairly predictable accents (which one may also challenge), it somehow felt wrong to give the voice of the ultimate, reviled bad guy a middle eastern accent.
The demonization (no pun intended) of folks from this region is based on historical conflict with Europe, to be sure. But this stereotype doesn’t need to be propagated amongst today’s YA novel readership anymore than a mermaid needs to be white.

Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Thank you
Revisado: 07-07-22
John Scalzi has a lot of great sci-Fi work under his belt and this is no exception. Witty, fairly fast paced, and fun to read, KPS is a great piece of pulp fiction at just the right time. A balm for the mind & laughter for the soul during the troubling times in which it was spawned. Good job.
Oh, and Wil Wheaton’s narration is the right voice for this book as well. Spot on.
Final note: I like the modern characters and their identities. As someone who was struggling to finish my dissertation during the pandemic, I could relate both to Scalzi’s stated real-life struggles as a writer (the author’s humanistic post-script hit me in the feels) and to the motley, multi-cultural group of scientists as well.
Well done.

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

Not a fan of the genre
Revisado: 12-30-18
I had high hopes for this given the reviews, but it's a little too disturbing for me. Horror in the psychological realm tends to be that way when taken far enough. I'm sure fans of the genre will love it. I'm not there. Sorry.

I like the style of this author's writing. Description is great and plot seems to move along nicely. Just that when it gets to the crazy horror stuff - I can't hang. Had to stop listening part way in.
