Historia
For much of her life, Sally Holt has been mystified by the things her older sister, Kathy, seems to have been born knowing. Kathy has answers for all of Sally’s questions about life, about love, and about Billy Barnes, a rising senior and local basketball star who mans the concession stand at the town pool. The girls have been fascinated by Billy ever since he jumped off the roof in elementary school, but Billy has never shown much interest in them until the summer before Sally begins eighth grade.

I love a story that gives me
A good view of a real person. Although this is
Story, the peek into this amazing author’s life was both entertaining and fulfilling. The characters built around her and how they touched each other’s lives is unwound with so much grace. I didn’t even see the plot twist coming until it hit me

Historia
Before Jodie Rattler became a star, she was a girl growing up in St. Louis. One day in 1955, when she was just six years old, her uncle Drew took her to the racetrack, where she got lucky—and the roll of two-dollar bills she won has never since left her side. Jodie thrived in the warmth of her extended family, and then—through a combination of hard work and serendipity—she started a singing career, which catapulted her from St. Louis to New York City, from the English countryside to the tropical beaches of St. Thomas, from Cleveland to Los Angeles and back again.

Lucky
Revisado: 06-04-24
Even if I didn’t live most of my life in St. Louis, Jane Smiley’s “Lucky” would have really hit a chord with me. As the main character, Jodie, grows and realizes some of her personality “flaws”, it reminded me of some I’ve shared with her. I loved the book!
However . . . The epilogue hit me as “what the heck?” I personally wish she would have left it at the last chapter.

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Well Researched

The author gives the reader a hard to stomach, yet well-researched view of the slave trade business. The bravery and selflessness of Phoebe Delores Brown is overwhelming.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Historia
Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous, physical work, and the men take care of the children.

Couldn’t Slow My Heart
Revisado: 04-10-22
As I listened to the final chapter of The Island of the Sea Women, I couldn’t slow my heart. This amazing tale of unbelievably strong woman kept me fixated to every chapter.
I knew close to nothing about Korean culture and history before diving into this book. The harrowing lives these women lived from such a young age hit me to the core.
Volumes on friendship, forgiveness are contained. But most of all, the lesson on not judging someone without walking in their shoes echoes in my head.

When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Historic, but current
Revisado: 06-05-20
As we over and over revisit racial tension in America, this book is a gem. It’s not only a reminder of how far
We’ve come, but how far we still have to go.
It’s full of rich characters, and (unfortunately) recaptures happenings at a real place.
