Historia
Written with the austere clarity that has made J. M. Coetzee the winner of two Booker Prizes, Disgrace explores the downfall of one man and dramatizes, with unforgettable, at times almost unbearable, vividness the plight of a country caught in the chaotic aftermath of centuries of racial oppression.

Engaging from the start

I read the book on Kindle while simultaneously listening to the audio book. Occasionally I would go back and just read the text slowly to luxuriate in the writing. One comes away from the work still deeply thinking about the many issues the book raises. I have been meaning to read it for a long time and am glad that I did.

Historia
Ovid's sensuous and witty poetry brings together a dazzling array of mythological tales, ingeniously linked by the idea of transformation - often as a result of love or lust - where men and women find themselves magically changed into new and sometimes extraordinary beings. Beginning with the creation of the world and ending with the deification of Augustus, Ovid interweaves many of the best-known myths and legends of Ancient Greece and Rome, including Daedalus and Icarus, Pyramus and Thisbe, Pygmalion, Perseus and Andromeda, and the fall of Troy.

Although this translation does not adequately address the modern view of rape, it is a very easy to listen to poetic rendering of the book.

Historia
Dating to the ninth century BC, Homer’s timeless poem still vividly conveys the horror and heroism of men and gods wrestling with towering emotions and battling amidst devastation and destruction, as it moves inexorably to the wrenching, tragic conclusion of the Trojan War. Renowned classicist Bernard Knox observes in his superb Introduction that although the violence of the Iliad is grim and relentless, it coexists with both images of civilized life and a poignant yearning for peace.

Historia
One of William Faulkner’s finest novels, As I Lay Dying, originally published in 1930, remains a captivating and stylistically innovative work. The story revolves around a grim yet darkly humorous pilgrimage, as Addie Bundren’s family sets out to fulfill her last wish: to be buried in her native Jefferson, Mississippi, far from the miserable backwater surroundings of her married life.

One of Faulkner’s finest novels
Revisado: 04-07-24
This was a pleasant way to reread this novel. I read along in my book as I listened to this performance. It captures the feeling that the reader moves from mind to mind as the story is revealed. It moves like a train, slowly picking up speed, then steadily driving to the foregone conclusion. This would be a good place to start, if one wants to get into one the greatest writers in the 20th Century.
