...unless, in addition to being a professional writer, you also have training/experience as a performer or public speaker: Please, please, PLEASE do not narrate your own work!!

I know your books are your Babies! And I know that we ALL like to dreamily anticipate how an author reading their own books will provide previous unbeknownst insight into their work!

But, as someone who has been involved in the industry side of the audiobook publishing world for years, please listen when I tell you that: In reality this is so SO rarely the case as to make it a patently unrealistic expectation for author AND audience. At BEST, the result will sound amateur (because.... they are). At worst, unlistenable.

(And, wherever it ends up falling on that continuum, it is all but guaranteed to come across as blatantly egotistical...)

And the latter end of that continuum is, unfortunately, where this recording lands; after an hour of some of the most a-tonal recitation and stilted, uncomfortably robotic dialogue... I just can't face the next 13 hours.

And this makes me so sad, y'all!

I have read and re-read Wicked probably more than a half-dozen times since it's publication and unreservedly believe it should be considered in the same echelon as contemporary masterpieces like Infinite Jest, as well as allotted a solid slot in literary history alongside the most lionized of The Greats, I'm talking Steinbeck and Bulgakov! (Haha, get it? LIONized?)

But writing a great book has as little to do with reading a great book as cooking a great meal has with industrial farming.

The audio of Wicked was beautiful. Spot on. And brought me back into this series after many years.

However, I humbly suggest that others do as I plan to do and grab a used paper copy of this installment for my eyes before picking up the 3rd book with my ears.

Because right now my ears are just too, too depressed to feel up to processing any more otherwise historic McGuire pros.

1st nar: "Hey, guys! I'm so excited to start this project with you. So my angle on this text is gonna be to make it as banal as possible. Like, narrating-a-car-manual bland, ZERO inflection..."

2nd nar: "No way, that's so cool, because I gave a GREAT Bruce Wayne I've been DYING to try on something! It's all theatrically gravely and overly dramatic yet also somehow totally emotionless."

3rd nar: "That sounds amazeballs. I've been working on this thing where I read a book like a despondent teenager giving a reluctant book report ON THAT BOOK and I think it would be PERFECT for this because it's super meta."

4th nar: "Erin Morganstern backed into my car, I will make people hate this."

5th nar: "Guys I have so much Xanax it's like unreal."

Having adored The Night Circus, I read this book when it came out and thought it was one of the most fascinating and magical pieces of print I'd found in a decade. Didn't think I could love a book more than NC but here it was, in my hands.

So I was extremely puzzled by the love-it-or-hate-it reviews on here, but am now wondering if the two camps have something to do with those who were lucky enough to find the print before attempting the audio.

Because if I'd come across this first I'd probably have crossed sides, and that is nothing less than tragic.

Do a good thing for yourself and pick up this book in print, it is beyond worth it.

(Note: All made-up words in this review are an attempted tribute to Auri's lovable language :))

Gosh. Having listened to books 1 and 2 and therefore having the background knowledge of this world to appreciate this story as "supplentful information" I cannot guarantee this, but... I have a feeling that this story might stand on it's own for those who aren't already familiar with Rothfuss' world. As he explains in the very personal... post-script?... it is in no way a typical short story, in fact is breaks ALL the supposed literary "rules".

But... as also mentioned: It seems, but most accounts, to work!

Why? How!?

No one seems to know! But for this I give the story and author even greater credit for presenting a piece of stand-alone lit that challenges pre-conceived notions of what such lit "needs" to be and makes the reader ask "why".

That's the best kind of story, imo.

In addition to this, for me Rothfuss' choice to narrate it himself gave it a wealth of additional depth and meaning. I always cringe this when I see the author's name in both places pre-order, but in this case... it ALSO works!! He has so obviously invested so much of himself and his care and love into this work that it becomes apparent it is, indeed, the ONLY choice.

And, for those who have similarly invested such in the previous books, it offers another layer of understanding of the man behind the world. Personally, I feel less skeptical of many potentially "problematic" parts of his other work and feel I noelw have a greater understanding of the (good) intention behind those confusing bits.

So... a very long and (hopefully) heartfelt review, hah, which is also in line with the story's elements! And it IS long! But that's part of it's charm as a meditation on structure and words and how there are more ways to harness them than those we're generally familiar with.

Try it! I wanna know what others think!

Books read by the author are almost always a no-go for me, but in this case Kate's reading of her own material raises the caliber of said material from merely incredible to nearly mind-blowing. She is a trained actor, which helps, but she's more than that: She is someone speaking so intimately and directly to her audience you can almost see her lips moving.

This book found me at a time in my life where I was experiencing the very things she writes so passionately about. She gave me the words and, with them, a safe space. This book feels like family. If you're a queer person of any stripe, or an ally, or just someone who appreciates stunning autobios... listen.

A beautiful piece of work.

So as the above suggests, this is already --has been for 25+ years-- my favorite book of all time. It is my go-to memorized childhood happy place to almost to a laughable degree.

And it all started with this audiobook recording.

My mom and I listened to this book in the ole mini van and... I was in love with every little bit of it.

My fan-girl infatuation may just be due to how much the main character influenced me as a tween, how I suddenly had a glimpse of the sort of woman I'd like to become.

But I don't think that's the only reason.

To me, Aerin Sol is still one of the most real, most human, and most... COMPLETE (?) protagonists I've ever met. She is withdrawn yet fearless, proud yet self-doubting, a savant who often fails, but above all she is brave. But it isn't a brash show of a lack of fear. She is brave in the true sense: Being afraid and doing it anyways.

Obvs I can lay it on thick all day, but this book (and the other in the series, The Blue Sword, coincidentally my 2nd favorite book? Or a tie... hah...) is a jewel. Not just for the robust and invested characters, but for the lush and totally engrossing world, for the tangible yet fantastical magical and social systems, and for the skill, pacing, and simple engaging pros themselves.

Frankly, I am amazed that these works aren't more well-known.

So do yourself a favor and try this. And then give copies to young women who are tired of the Princess in Love trope and crave a girl as dynamic and brave as they are.

Also, there is none of the other --but just as trite-- "but she's a girl doing a man's job!" trope that is almost as obnoxious these days. She isn't a Girl, she is a Young Person who is also female. You know, like actual people.

Oh, and a note to the folks who have qualms with the narrator: While I can see your point (a bit nasal, quite raspy, probably smokes... a lot) I gotta disagree that she is anything less than brilliant. For this story, about a very real-imagined protagonist, I felt I was being read to by an old aunt who had seen some stuff in her time. And probably smoked a lot. It's an odd choice at first, but give it a chance and you'll realize that it WORKS.
