Absolutely brilliant! This is NOT your typical war story. Yes, there’s action in full detail but Marlantes delves into the mind of the Warrior like no other in modern times.

Historia
John Edmund Delezen felt a kinship with the people he was instructed to kill in Vietnam; they were all at the mercy of the land. His memoir begins when he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was sent to Vietnam in March of 1967. He volunteered for the Third Force Recon Company, whose job it was to locate and infiltrate enemy lines undetected and map their locations and learn details of their status. The duty was often painful both physically and mentally. He was stricken with malaria in November of 1967, wounded by a grenade in February of 1968, and hit by a bullet later that summer.

Great story, bad narration
Revisado: 02-22-22
The author does get a bit poetic but I loved his writing style. He really conveys what it’s like, you can feel the heat, hate the bugs, and fear the enemy.
The narrator reads with such monotone that I had to stop listening from time to time. This would be a good book to actually read. Narrator pretty much ruined the book.

Historia
In 2009, after a divorce that left her heartbroken and directionless, Kristin decided to accept an offer to live at a friend's cabin outside of Denali National Park in Alaska for a few months. In exchange for housing, she would take care of her friend's eight sled dogs. That winter, she learned that she was tougher than she ever knew. She learned how to survive in one of the most remote places on Earth and she learned she was strong enough to be alone. She fell in love twice: first with running sled dogs, and then with Andy, a man who had moved to Alaska to heal a broken heart.

What a great adventure!
Revisado: 03-03-20
I usually don’t like it when the author does the reading but Kristin is an exception: the emotions she felt when living this adventure come through in her reading of it (I cried right long with her when she read about Moose).
Some critics dinged her for some rookie stuff but I found it endearing.
Lastly, I cannot even imagine the hardship she (and Andy) endured running these events, unbelievable. Total awe and respect!
Great book, hope she writes another.

Historia
When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn't Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?

AUTHORS: don’t read your own book!
Revisado: 12-17-18
Hire a professional. I wanted to listen to this book but Scott’s monochromatic slow paced reading was just to frustrating to listen to. This is one of many books where the author read it and was terrible at it. You do what you’re good at and leave the narration to the pros.

Historia
In medical charts, the term "N.A.D." (No Apparent Distress) is used for patients who appear stable. The phrase also aptly describes America's medical system when it comes to treating the underprivileged. Medical students learn on the bodies of the poor - and the poor suffer from their mistakes. Rachel Pearson confronted these harsh realities when she started medical school in Galveston, Texas.

Historia
A fixation on porn and orgasm, strings of failed relationships and serial hook-ups with strangers, inevitable blackouts to blunt the shame - these are not things we often hear women share publicly, and not with the candor, eloquence and introspection Erica Garza brings to Getting Off. Garza draws an evocative, studied portrait of the anxiety that fuels her obsessions as well as the exhilaration and hope she begins to feel when she suspects she might be free of them. And yet there is no false or prepackaged sense of redemption here.

Fascinating venture into the mid of a highly sexual woman
Revisado: 01-27-18
I found this book to be very honest, raw, and very interesting. Extremely well written and superbly narrated. As a man who has crossed path’s with women like Erica this really helped explain much. Women are complicated so every time I read a book or meet a woman with such astounding honesty and insight I learn and understand more (last one was “Wild”). Despite the title this book this isn’t a series of graphic descriptions about raunchy sex, if that’s what you’re looking for then skip it. In my opinion this book is about the need to balance sexuality, whether you’re a man or a woman, the porn addition is just one part of the whole picture. I look forward to reading more from Erica, and not just about sex. She’s clearly very intelligent and I’m sure she’ll use that talent writing about all types of subjects.
