started promising... dull middle... dramatic end
Revisado: 02-03-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
When I pay money for a book I hope that I will find a gem that will keep drawing me back to the story..if not...minimally I hope for a story engaging enough for me to listen to while I get the house work done. If I hadn't paid money for this one, I would have left it go way before the end. The first chapter or so was very promising but after that it was hours and hours and hours of a slow story line that just didn't take off. Finally , just as it became interesting it was over. Was this time well spent? ........my house is cleaner............
Has Sycamore Row turned you off from other books in this genre?
Almost...will be a while before I dip my toe in that water again.....
Which scene was your favorite?
Don't want to say because it is a spoiler
Did Sycamore Row inspire you to do anything?
clean the house so I could get my money's worth and move onto the next book
Any additional comments?
Maybe it's just me..looking back I don't know how the writer filled up so much time with words that didn't seem to say too much except the end.Perhaps I missed the point- if the book is boring it makes the dramatic ending more dramatic

Historia
Tom Keely's reputation is in ruins. And that's the upside. Divorced and unemployed, he's lost faith in everything precious to him. Holed up in a grim high-rise, cultivating his newfound isolation, Keely looks down at a society from which he's retired, hurt and angry. He's done fighting the good fight, and well past caring. But even in his seedy flat, ducking the neighbours, he's not safe from entanglement. All it takes is an awkward encounter in the lobby. A woman from his past, and a boy the likes of which he's never met before.

There is something special about Tim Winton
Revisado: 11-21-13
What made the experience of listening to Eyrie the most enjoyable?
Tim Winton is an extraordinary writer who has the ability to bring characters to life to the degree that I always feel a touch of grief when I finish one of his books. This book was no exception- I will miss the characters.
Michael Veitch brought the dialogue to life with such skill I could imagine some of the scenes being used in Actors workshops. There were times that his intonation was truly captivating- so natural yet so compelling- a great resource for linguists interested in the Australian accent.
It's not the type of book that has a rip roaring story line to keep you on the edge of your seat. But it does have captivating language that makes it a worthwhile book to read if you enjoy relishing well written novels. I don't know what else to write without giving away the story so I will leave it here. Lovely

Wow ! Very powerful
Revisado: 03-04-13
What did you love best about The Book Thief?
It took me a while to get used to the style of the writing and the narration but once I did I really appreciated listening to something quite different to anything else I had listened to. I loved the fact that sometimes it was so powerful I had to just stop what I was doing and just listen.
Have you listened to any of Dennis Olsen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't listened to Dennis Olsen before but I will definitely look into it ! He was very theatrical and once I got used to it, I fell in love with him. He added so much to the listening-his last line sent shivers down my spine and I couldn't stop thinking about it all day.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Lots of extreme reactions the whole way through the book.

For those that love surfing and the sea.
Revisado: 03-04-13
Would you try another book from Tim Winton and/or Dan Wyllie?
I purchased this book because I had just finished Tim Winton's Cloudstreet which I absolutely adored. Maybe this is why I was a bit disappointed as I was looking for something like Cloudstreet but it was very different.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
For those who love surfing and the thrill of riding waves this book captures that beautifully. I liked the story inbetween these scenes but not enough to enjoy this book as much as others.

Lovely !
Revisado: 03-04-13
Would you listen to Cloudstreet again? Why?
As soon as I finished I had to go back and listen to the very first scene again...with tears running down my cheeks. Yes, I will listen to the whole thing again one day because I think it is one of those books where it's not just the story that is wonderful to listen to, it's revisiting "old friends" that will be fun.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I didn't really have a favourite character because the whole book is full of interesting and wonderful characters. This is definitely the book for those who love books about people. I was sad when the book finished because I felt that I had gotten to know the characters so well that I knew them and will miss them terribly.
What does Peter Hosking bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He brings life to the story and characters. He did a terrific job.
If you could take any character from Cloudstreet out to dinner, who would it be and why?
I wouldn't want to take anyone out for dinner from Cloudstreet- I would invite myself over for dinner. I would be content to be a fly on the wall !
Any additional comments?
I listened to this book while I was renovating my house so now the characters and stories are embedded in my house too. I feel very sentimental about this book - so much so the first thing I did after I finished listening was purchase another Tim Winton book in the hope of finding another book just like it.

Historia
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early 40s, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

worth a listen

Any additional comments?
It look me a few goes to get into this book but not sure why. After a few "starts" I got to know the characters and then I was totally hooked. I think it helped to have heard the interviews that JK Rowlings made to promote the book because it helps to understand the background and the reason why the book was written.

Historia
Conventional science has long held the position that 'the mind' is merely an illusion, a side effect of electrochemical activity in the physical brain. Now in paperback, Dr Jeffrey Schwartz and Sharon Begley's groundbreaking work, The Mind and the Brain, argues exactly the opposite: that the mind has a life of its own. Dr Schwartz, a leading researcher in brain dysfunctions, and Wall Street Journal science columnist Sharon Begley demonstrate that the human mind is an independent entity that can shape and control the functioning of the physical brain.

If you could sum up The Mind and the Brain in three words, what would they be?
Brilliant, thought provoking, a bit wafty
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
no
Any additional comments?
A wonderful book that will change the way you look at the world both inner and outer. It is heavy going at times and the writer sometimes seems to go on and on a bit, but overall I really loved it and have recommended it to my friends. If it gets a bit boring, stick with it because there are some really fabulous chapters.

Big claims- lesson disappointing
Revisado: 02-16-12
What would have made Learn Japanese with Innovative Language's Proven Language System - Level 05: Advanced better?
Take away the HUGE long ad in the beginning for a start. Very big claims, repetitive and boring.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
disappointment
Any additional comments?
As a language teacher and as a language student I don't understand how anyone can learn Japanese from this system. This opinion is based only on the sample lesson that I just listened to so the main lessons might be different. I didn't hear any grammar or sufficient explanations. The long winded ad at the beginning put me off as well. By the time they got to the lesson I was sick of listening to it.
