Amazing story! But there are glitches in the audio
Revisado: 08-12-24
The story is fantastic as all of the Red River stories have been. However, the audio version has some pretty major glitches in that the chapters do not live up at all! I hadn't been having any of these problems with the previous books. For example, the audio will have a pause and then say, "Chapter 35" and it's only halfway through chapter 18, and if you set a timer for the end of a chapter, it will stop mid-sentence or even mid word!
But this did not take away from my enjoyment of the novel. Andrew especially needs to grow up and mature some before he can marry his Ellie, and some very hard life lessons and difficult circumstances serve to help him do so.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Wonderful, Beautiful modern romance
Revisado: 07-22-22
Ms. Chu must have a great insight into the life of celebrities. Every book by her that I've read has a fictional celebrity who struggles with the lifestyle. It humanizes them, and it's a real treat. This one has two! And the regular girl being pulled into their crazy world is a wonderful lens for us to watch from. There's great character development on all involved, and it's so much more than a simple romance. I'm now a fan of her work, and can't wait to see what else she comes up with!
And, as always, Ms. Soo is a joy to listen to!

An enjoyable diversion!
Revisado: 07-22-22
Binged this book in one weekend. I absolutely loved it! While the overall plot is mostly predictable, there were a few surprises along the way, too. Things didn't resolve the way I'd expected them to, but that's a good thing because the result is more realistic, and therefore more satisfying. It was also refreshing to see the world through the eyes of characters that are rarely seen: lawyers, celebrities, and the ubiquitous world of K-Pop. And the character development was wonderful to see, too! This was more than just a happy little romance. The characters had to grow and start living life on their own terms, not someone else's.
And Philippa Soo is a joy to listen to! She brings such a depth to Ari's first person narration that I feel like I know the characters personally.

Wow!
Revisado: 01-21-19
First, I should be upfront and say that I know Samantha personally. But, she did not solicit my review, or even my purchase of the book. Just wanted to be honest about that.
But wow! Samantha can write! I had no idea! The story is fast paced and intriguing. I was hooked practically from the very first word. The official blurb compares this to the Hunger Games and Divergent (I've read and enjoyed both), but that's not really accurate. Yes, it's a bit dystopian, and the heroes are teens, but the tone is much more optimistic than those other books. There is a lot of hope for a better future, where those other books just seem to hope for a future that's less awful. I highly recommend this!
The narrator in the audio book was very good, but I have one critique: sometimes he stutters or pauses in the middle of a sentence awkwardly. It doesn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the book, but it doesn't flow as smoothly as it could. But I still recommend!!!!

Great Buildup, Great narrator!
Revisado: 11-09-18
The author is obviously a huge fan of Star Trek! He has expertly woven part of the Enterprise mythos into this TNG story. There are also brief nods to DS9 and Voyager as well! The plot sucked me in: I had to know what was happening next! My only critique is that the answers to the mystery seemed a little too simple compared to the buildup.
The narrator was excellent! He did various different accents for different characters, and actually did a very good Picard and Worf! (His LaForge needs a little work, but hey, nobody's perfect!)
