Historia
Xavier Collins was sitting in class when the System integrated Earth into the Greater Universe, where countless vast kingdoms, empires, and collectives battle for domination. He didn't know what choosing to be a Champion would entail. He just liked the sound of it. But when he's teleported to the aptly-named Tower of Champions, he must face challenges against those who have known about the System since birth.

Interesting world, unlikeable MC.
Revisado: 08-28-24
The MC has the mental speed of a slow-rolling square wheel, and plot armor twice as thick as his thought processes. This story reads as the self-satisfaction power trip fantasy of someone who secretly thinks "If only a magic apocalypse would happen, I would be able to show my true worth!". Insert said person as the MC, and have every third thought be a "supposed deep-thought reflection" that is only puddle-deep.
Other than the grandfather-like "here is all the titles you could ever want" plot armor, the system has a good concept. If only the characters were characters and not a 13-year old boy's power fantasy, it would have promise.

Historia
In 1968, nine sailors set off on the most daring race ever held: to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe nonstop. It was a feat that had never been accomplished and one that would forever change the face of sailing. Ten months later, only one of the nine men would cross the finish line and earn fame, wealth, and glory. For the others, the reward was madness, failure, and death. In this extraordinary book, Peter Nichols chronicles a contest of the individual against the sea, waged at a time before cell phones and electronic positioning systems.

Historia
The story is told beginning with the vision and desire to sail on the ocean, through the training and education, buying a boat, gaining experience, and finally embarking on a 1000nm journey to bring the boat home, singlehanded. An immersive nonfiction adventure story, Becoming a Sailor captures the scene as one would experience it. Becoming a Sailor also goes into technical detail about the repairs and additions to Sobrius, a 1972 Dufour Arpege, as well as the techniques the author had to learn in order to sail singlehanded on multiday passages.

Starts off relevant, but becomes tangential
Revisado: 01-21-24
I really like the parts of the book that actually describe the authors trials and tribulations in the process of acquiring, rebuilding, and sailing his boat. I also like the references to the author's reading library, many of which I have also read. I dislike the tangents that become more and more common the farther in the book the reader dives, such as the whole section that describes the author's belief in the need for human population control, opinions on the exotic pet trade, and advocacy on attempting lucid dreaming. Quite frankly, the stories of practical sailing are enjoyable, but when the author becomes started on a self-rightous tangent, feel free to skip the next 10 minutes to get back on topic.

Historia
When COVID-19 struck the UK, the government advised the over-70s to "shield" while the country went into lockdown. One old man went sailing instead. Single-handed and self-isolated, retired journalist John Passmore used the pandemic to achieve an ambition that had eluded him for 60 years. For 3,629 miles, he disappeared into a world of perfect solitude, adventure, and adversity, arriving back 42 days later, short of water and with shredded sails, to find himself celebrated on national radio as the embodiment of everybody’s lockdown dream. This is his story.

A fun and lighthearted tale, with ads.
Revisado: 10-21-23
This tale of a grandfatherly man's escape to the sea during the start of the Corona epidemic is a light and enjoyable read relatable to the seaward dreamer. The narrator delightfully captures the character of the author, and the impeccable voice changes are a treat. The only slip up for this tale is the slight self-advertisement of the nutritional products the author sells which breaks the illusion of the reader partaking on the voyage, even if they are not directly mentioned by name. Otherwise, 100% enjoyable and a recommended read.

Historia
Islands, Oceans and Dreams is a true story of a man who, at the age of 33, began dreaming of voyaging with his wife to the South Pacific. He wasn't an adventurer or daring by nature, but he bought a boat and began learning the ways of the sea. Twenty years later, racked with the pain of divorce and still aching to live out his dream, he set off alone for Tahiti. After reaching French Polynesia, he continued cruising for seven years and wound up solo sailing around the world.

Great story, sound editing loses a star.
Revisado: 10-21-23
The story is similar to a more modern (90s and 00s instead of 70s and 80s) tale from Larry and Lin Pardey, if not including their lovely charm as a couple, it contains a captivating tale of a man, a dream, and his solo-sail trip around the world. The story itself is great; the only thing that is disappointing is the sound editing. There are approximately 10 or so instances throughout the book where the editors did not cut the lines where the narrator started a sentence, stopped, and restarted his line to better create the feeling, and towards the end of the book the "sh", "ss", and "ch" sounds come across as sharp and peaky, causing the listener to wince and reach for the volume control, even if they haven't had to do so the rest of the book, which shows a lack of equalization throughout the whole narration. The narrator successfully enables the listener to escape into the tale despite these faults, however, and I still recommend it to the seaward dreamer.

Pizza, coffee, and a library full of unplayed games. That's the plan, or at least it was supposed to be. Instead, an average gamer finds himself seemingly transported into the world of his favorite game. While some might appreciate that, it's quickly apparent that he isn't in some sort of virtual reality experiment, all of his downloaded mods are active, and the world is likely set to its highest difficulty with permadeath enabled.

Minecraft Dungeons isekai harem word porn
Revisado: 05-09-23
Action scenes aren't bad, world concept is interesting. Contains completely graphic harem word porn fantasy for the lonely nerd, which may be great for some, annoying for others. I didn't particularly care for that.

Too cliche main character, good plot idea/ system
Revisado: 08-24-22
the main character is the cliche predictable plot armor do-gooder with the typical naivety and lack of forethought. I like the system and world theme however, a lot of potential there.

Good for young adults, cringey otherwise
Revisado: 08-05-22
The main character, written as a 25 year old with social anxiety and recent familial loss, comes across as a whiny, cowardly, naive 17 year old with the forethinking and object permanence of a goldfish. The other characters introduced are fleeting and then forgotten, oftentimes cliches in their own right. The most fleshed out characters were the villains/antagonists. Overall, this feels like a shallow retelling of a story that could have been good, but was fumbled.
