Historia
For two thousand years, cadavers have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Improbable even for a Rom/Mystery
Revisado: 07-24-24
This was a vacuous listen. Character development was uneven and red herrings scattered throughout. Narration was fine. I wish the story and final big reveal/confrontation had been a little more plausible . Then maybe the soapy elements of it would have been more tolerable.

Good not great
Revisado: 05-23-24
This story lures you with the promise of early twentieth century adventure. But the record of Fawcett’s incompleted attempt to discover an ancient Amazonian city is simply lacking in enough details that the reader is left to speculation without much drama. The explorers who tried to account for Fawcett’s disappearance don’t have compelling stories themselves but much of the book is about their own failed attempts. There’s just not a lot of THERE there until the final pages.

Historia
What if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self—a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but, in a twisted, upside-down way, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against? Not long ago, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience—she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who.

Reflections of ourselves
Revisado: 01-24-24
Klein shows us how reflections of ourselves are hijacked and leveraged against us . She makes the urgent case that we should rise above our darker inclinations as a species. It sounds like Naomi Wolf was unable to do this. A grim but important read.

Lonesome Dove is a stellar example of a classic American novel that has something for everyone: humor, danger, meaningful human relationships, struggle, loneliness, triumphs, and humiliating defeat. Everything that made up the settling of the west, and the last adventures of the American cowboy. It is one of those rare books that I did not want to end.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Charles Dickens if he had lived in modern America
Revisado: 08-01-23
Demon Copperhead is a richly authentic account of a scrappy American childhood.
Dickensian in scope and good humor, this character-driven novel is full of hard-knock happenings during a time when the foster care system was both savior and hellscape. Demon makes an amiable, plucky protagonist who manages to claw his way out of many desperate situations with as much grace as can be accomplished in a world of hucksters and users. It sounds grim, but Kingsolver keeps the prose bouncy and the tone hopeful throughout and leaves a satisfying character experience with the reader.

A tapestry of an alternative family life
Revisado: 07-02-23
The Amazing Adventures of K & C is an extraordinary look at at rare collaborative business friendship. Two cousins play their artistic strengths off each other during a tumultuous few decades in America and Europe. Chabon gives us a tantalizing view of comic book creativity and the scrappy publishing industry that exploited it prior to WWII in his tale of two enterprising cousins trying to imagine an American dream. But it is Joe Kavalier and Sammy Clay’s loves and losses that invest us in the story.
David Colacci inhabits and enlivens each character.

“I was a devil in other countries, and I was a little devil in America, too.” Inspired by these few words, spoken by Josephine Baker at the 1963 March on Washington, MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow and best-selling author Hanif Abdurraqib has written a profound and lasting reflection on how Black performance is inextricably woven into the fabric of American culture. Filled with sharp insight, humor, and heart, A Little Devil in America exalts the Black performance that unfolds in specific moments in time and space

Well-written but not consistently compelling
Revisado: 11-20-22
Very well-written and researched. Some of the stories were compelling, others not. A history of Dominos and the cultural influence of FYPU? No. A history of Josephine Baker and Merry Clayton? Yes, please. Maybe that reflects my gender and race but the people
stories were more interesting than the cultural influencer stories.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Although I’ve read the Hobbit many times, I never tire of Tolkien’s delightful tale of hobbits and their friends and adventures. Amusing, wonderfully atmospheric, and full of wisdom.
