Barbara Pym is a writer with a very special worldview and a distinctive sense of humor. Jayne Entwistle as narrator proves to be a perfect match. I recommend this recording both to those who already know and love Pym and to those discovering her for the first time (as long as they realize that the charms on offer here are of the most delicate variety -- BP is not for those who want a lot of upheavals in their plots!).

Would you listen to The Secret of Chimneys again? Why?

Hugh Fraser does an excellent job with the character voices and the pacing. This book's plot is quite convoluted and a bit silly, but he brings out the suspense that makes it work.

If you’ve listened to books by Agatha Christie before, how does this one compare?

Instead of either of her famous detectives (Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple), it has a main character/amateur detective who is himself a bit of a mystery.

Any additional comments?

As with many early Christie novels, beware of derogatory ethnic stereotypes and out-and-out anti-Semitism.

If you could sum up How to Live in three words, what would they be?

What did you like best about this story?

It covers many aspects of Montaigne's life, writings and after-life (his reception by other thinkers) and yet manages to feel light and entertaining. It would be absurd to say that this book is as good as the Essais themselves, but it does convey something of Montaigne's idiosyncratic charm.

What did you like best about this story?

The premise sounds gimmicky, but it is developed in a smart funny way with several separate story lines, each with its own set of vivid characters.

What about Martin Jarvis’s performance did you like?

Great character voices, wonderful timing -- his performance really makes an already funny book come alive.

quiet satire

As a mystery, this may not be the most exciting book or the most exciting narration. But this is more like a gentle satire of English class in the countryside (more like Barbara Pym than Agatha Christie). At first I thought the narrator was a little ponderous, but as I readjusted my expectations to the kind of book this is, I really enjoyed his deadpan humor.
