I’ve read all of Corey’s books and continue to get value out of every one. Unfortunately the chapter markers here don’t line up with the narration.

I have read a lot of books on relationships and this one is up there among the best. I really appreciated the author’s focus on what’s going on inside of ourselves as we work on our relationship. I liked the no judgement approach of solving problems without trying to solve our partners. Overall this style of writing resonates with me because it’s simultaneously direct without being preachy, serious yet easy to take in, without fluff or an attempt to demonstrate to readers how much the author knows. I am looking forward to applying and practicing several of the ideas in this book and to reading more from this author.

Several years ago I read Stephen Mitchell's translation but finished the book feeling somewhat underwhelmed and a little lost. It wasn't the author's fault but my own, as I sensed I was missing the forest for the trees. With this 'plain translation,' Liu embodies the principle it is more important that people learn than it is to see one teach. It was an illuminating experience.

I quite appreciated the side stories, references to Zhuangzi, and seeing a bit of Liu's own sense of humor as well. BD Wong was perfect for the job. I will be ordering a hard copy to keep handy.

I think this book could benefit from an abridged version that keeps the focus on how to apply its ideas. The first half of the book was a snooze fest and I almost gave up multiple times. But the second half is quite good and I took away a number of things. Below a summary of key points:

- We become “political” at the moment we attempt to translate our vision into action.
-Leadership is the capacity to initiate an alternative future.
- Most organizations are conflict-averse.
- Being “political” wasn’t always a bad thing. The meaning has been distorted.
- Pursue your interests but in a way that honors the interests of others.
- Power comes from a willingness to be vulnerable.
- When you’re vulnerable, all you’re doing is acknowledging what the world already knows.
- As soon as people start complaining, they’ve chosen helplessness.
- When we have strong negative reactions to people, it’s our projection.

Types of people in the workplace:

- Allies = high agreement / high trust
- Opponents = high trust / low agreement
- Bedfellows = low trust / high agreement
- Adversaries = low trust / low agreement
- Fence Sitters = low trust / unknown agreement

Pros
- Scott's energy
- Articulate
- Practical advice
- Scott's perspective reinforced how I want to live my life
- Length was no longer than necessary to get the message across

Con
- Felt like an extended podcast episode. He could have added color in some areas e.g. when he casually mentions he's started 9 businesses as if that's completely ordinary

Alison has a very generous take on men. As a man myself, unfortunately I didn't find this book very practical in terms of showing how a man goes from one stage to the next. But then that doesn't seem to have been its purpose. Instead, the book seems to have been written to help women identify the different stages of life their men are in, and how those women can show up in those times. To be frank, even that part is a little light.

I am glad I found this book by recommendation from Brian Johnson, the author of "Areté: Activate Your Heroic Potential." In three parts, this book discusses four significant US presidents: Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson. Parts 1 and 2 are concisely written introductions into each of the men's rise to power and fame. I found Part 3 the most useful because the author uses interesting stories to tell about the different leadership traits that helped each president succeed.

The main thing I wasn't fond of about this book, was it inevitably made me want to compare the presidents to each other which was more distracting than useful. Overall though, still very good value.

I listened to "Fidelity" first and the information here is largely the same, with the difference being of course, Thay's voice and the fact that this is a recording from one (or more) of his live talks. "Fidelity' also has the audiobook nicely organized into multiple chapters detailing specific practices which is helpful for a habitual hopper like me. This audiobook, on the other hand, is organized into two 1 hour long chapters, so you may find yourself having to make more bookmarks along the way.

As a guy struggling to maintain the vitality in my relationship, this was just the book I needed. This is not a "go on a date 1x a week" or "healthy couples have sex three times a week" kind of book (although those can be useful) but rather, focuses on deeper questions such as, "how to transform your feelings and emotions when you get the craving to sleep with someone else other than your beloved." I will admit it's definitely easier said than done, but it's well worth the time and effort if you are looking for more sustainable practices over the long run. The narrator's voice took a short time to get used to but then the performance actually grew on me.

I had read a few of Thai's books and almost wish I would have started with this one. If you are completely new to his books, I recommend going to plum village dot org which helps to categorize his books along topics.

If you listen to Guy Raz' podcast and enjoy it, just stick to the podcast. This book synthesizes a whole lot of podcast episodes but really doesn't offer any more in the way of inspiration or implementation details. The world's most inspiring entrepreneurs either have their own books which will tell you way more about how they actually got there, and/or there are better books that break down the nuts, bolts and challenges of building a business.

Now if you want to listen to Raz weaving in some interesting anecdotes from various entrepreneurs, then sure, this audiobook might be of interest to you, but only if you can stand 10 hours of Raz's happy-go-lucky "you can do this too!" voice narration.
