Historia
London, 1955: Grace Monroe is a fortunate young woman. Despite her sheltered upbringing in Oxford, her recent marriage has thrust her into the heart of London's most refined and ambitious social circles. Then one evening a letter arrives from France that will change everything. Grace has received an inheritance. There's only one problem: she has never heard of her benefactor, the mysterious Eva d'Orsey. Told by invoking the three distinctive perfumes she inspired, Eva d'Orsey's story weaves through the decades, from 1920s New York to Monte Carlo, Paris, and London.

Very Well Written!
Revisado: 05-25-24
The story is always interesting and you can't really figure out what happens next, even though the author gives subtle clues. I listened to it again to notice the way she writes about what will come in further chapters. Another book of hers that I've listened to a hundred times is "Three Daughters" which I think is superb. That narrator really brings the story to life. Highly recommend! This author was a little bland with inflection and the voices don't really pop, but she did a fine job.

So Trite
Revisado: 05-14-24
The story itself reads like a young adult book. I expected more based on the reviews. The narration is awful! Injecting a Russian accent in an American character was just stupid. The inflection of the narrator was too sing song, making a childish story seem the more so, unfortunately. Good thing this was a sale book. Hitchcock? Not even close.

Maeve Fanning is a first-generation Irish immigrant born and raised among the poor, industrious Italian families of Boston's North End by her widowed mother. Clever, capable, and as headstrong as her red hair suggests, she's determined to better herself despite the overwhelming hardships of the Great Depression. However, Maeve also has a dangerous fondness for strange men and bootleg gin - a rebellious appetite that soon finds her spiraling downward, leading a double life.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Narrator AI?
Revisado: 10-24-23
How is it possible that the narrator does not know how to pronounce Wilmette? Will-met. Not will-meet! It was the town Holmes put his family homestead in and should be important enough to get correct, don't you think? Other areas are just as badly said. It really distracted from the story! Brooklyn is brook-line. It's like a bad YouTube video narration.

Historia
Nina once bought into the idea that her fancy liberal arts degree would lead to a fulfilling career. When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in LA alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Nina learned from the best: Her mother was the original con artist, hustling to give her daughter a decent childhood despite their wayward life. But when her mom gets sick, Nina puts everything on the line to help her, even if it means running her most audacious, dangerous scam yet.

Irish BROGUE Not Brew!
Revisado: 02-19-23
I thought the story plot was very interesting and I liked the notions that were entertained during the course of this book; however, that being said I must take umbrage at the mispronunciation of words, especially when those words are not foreign words. During my listening of this book I heard many French words being uttered and I did not know what they meant. There were also obscure references to ancient mythology that even when I tried to look them up to understand what the author meant by including such a detail they were not located in any of the searches I undertook. I'm no slouch in the literary environment so I think my complaints are valid.
As far as the characters in the book are concerned I think all of the scattered bits about Benny did not serve his storyline as well as it should have been. He is a key character whose interlocking relationships might seem less important to the plot but he is as important as anyone else. If, for example, listeners were able to hear more than a sentence or two about how Benny's existence was always less shiny than Vanessa's and therefore shaped him into the tragic figure that he became, it would have made more sense. The author just fed us such small crumbs about a central figure and left us to try to figure out why Benny is the way he is and what does make him so tragic and why he is such a central character.
What I would have liked better is a more detailed dive into the pool of psychotropic drugs and their effects on an adolescent brain. It is suggested in the book that Benny's only wrong doing was being an artist. His parents squelched his natural talents and desires to create by putting him on Ritalin along with antidepressants at the age of 12. Twelve! Is it any wonder that his brain got so messed up?
Yet when all is said and done I do like this book. I would recommend it to others. It almost seems like it could have been two books because there was so much to be conveyed.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Mesmerizing
Revisado: 01-18-23
I knew very little about the author yet I found it difficult to stop listening once I started. In fact, I renewed my Audible membership primarily for this book because the sample, the SAMPLE, was mesmerizing! Good on ya, Harry, as they say in Britain. Well written and well performed. I can't say anything bad about this book.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

His Sister's Suicide is NOT Funny
Revisado: 02-22-22
I really like David and have read almost everything he has written, and when I met him he was warm and genuine. After Tiffany killed herself, I went back to the beginning with family tales, paying closer attention to her upbringing. David's surprise at any sibling wanting to leave him demonstrates his myopic view. I do give him props for finally taking the blinders off regarding his mother and including Gretchen more in this book, but it's not all hilarity as so many people wrote. Lastly, age 60 is not middle age! Living to be 120 is not the norm. I felt he had a long way to go still with accepting the reality, not the realty, in his life.
I personally feel that Tiffany did suffer abuse and alienation from those who were supposed to love & protect her...the family that David idolizes.

The Problem With References
Revisado: 01-12-22
I really liked this book and Xander did a great job... but it demonstrates emphatically why culture references are causing a huge problem in communication. Any writer wanting to get their ideas across should do so by using adjectives and descriptive narratives because the readers haven't lived your life. They don't know about everything you are comparing things and/or people to, ergo it creates a block, a barrier in communication which ultimately hurts the story. The point is not to alienate your audience, but that's exactly what culture references do. I'm no slouch and I missed a lot of the meaning of the story. For example: Billy Pilgrim means nothing to me. I have no idea what he's trying to get across. He ought to have known that. The editor should have done a better job as well.

Interesting Notion
Revisado: 01-12-22
This was the first book I read in the series because of a review I read. I find the notion Anne Rice presents here is unique especially from a Catholic point of view. I've read all the Vampire Chronicles since and I think our beloved anti-hero Lestat is portrayed well here as he struggles with wanting to be good, which is a desire that has always been inside him, since he was a mortal boy.
