Pretty awful
Revisado: 04-21-25
I finished this book out of pure stubbornness. It was a challenge. The reader mispronounces words sometimes and that’s the most noteworthy thing about this novel. Just…don’t.

Historia
A virus tears across the globe, transforming its victims in nightmarish ways. As the world collapses, dark forces pull a small group of women together. Erin, once quiet and closeted, acquires an appetite for a woman and her brain. Why does forbidden fruit taste so good? Savannah, a professional BDSM switch, discovers a new turn-on: committing brutal murders for her eldritch masters. Mareva, plagued with chronic tumors, is too horrified to acknowledge her divine role in the coming apocalypse, and as her growths multiply, so too does her desperation.

2/3rds good
Revisado: 12-06-22
Really enjoyed the first two books. Engaging characters, plausible adventures, and relatable themes. The third book was a speeded up sequence of military battles one after the other. Hard to follow with few engaging characters. I almost feel guilty asking for a refund but this is the second book in 17 years that I simply cannot finish.

Historia
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

MUCH better than the TV series, as is true with most books. Gives a unique account of how Texas came to be.

Historia
Pop star Leontyne Blake might sing about love, but she stopped believing in it a long time ago. What women want is her image, not the real her. When her father has a stroke, she flees the spotlight and returns to her tiny Missouri hometown. In her childhood home, she meets small-town nurse Holly Drummond, who isn't impressed by Leo's fame at all. That isn't the only thing that makes Holly different from other women. She's also asexual. For her, dating is a minefield of expectations that she has decided to avoid.

No surprises
Revisado: 02-24-21
Jae writes some wonderful books and has touched on so many critical issues in the community. This book was a challenge to finish. No intriguing twists and turns and the repetitions asexual definition and ‘close calls’ was tedious. I’ll be happy to try another title by Jae, though.

Couldn’t finish the book
Revisado: 12-11-19
The author reads this book which usually makes for an interesting listen but Toni Morrison never seemed to have enough air to finish the sentence. Her breathy pauses made the story impossible for me to follow. She came down.............the stairs..........and saw...............her mother.................sitting............near the window. Sorry, Toni. I’ll give it another try in print.

Historia
Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen - the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria - took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

Reads like a history text book only not as good
Revisado: 03-14-19
The narrator sounds like a disgruntled, failed Shakespearean actor who was never given a speaking part in an off-broadway production. His voice is the only thing less enjoyable than the text. Sorry, GRRM, I'm going to have to return this one before I hit the 1 hour mark.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Engaging story of resilience and strength
Revisado: 11-27-18
The characters in this story were wonderfully real and so appealing to read about. The premise of the story piqued my curiosity and touched my heart. This would make a wonderful movie or TV series. I hope the author is working on other novels and I will be first in line to purchase anything she writes!

Historia
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Too conservative
Revisado: 06-06-18
Might be a great story but too conservative/right wing. Scriptural references are just fine in a novel but this one is more like Sunday school than an apocalyptic thriller. It’s the second book out of thousands of hours of listening that I just couldn’t finish.
