I had high hopes, but too opaque and self-indulgen
Revisado: 02-12-24
Fantastic premise, interesting characters, and very talented writer. Unfortunately I just don't like the approach and direction she chose. Opacity is great at the outset and even middle, but the denouement remained too thickly opaque to satisfy. Character development is good and psychology is interesting, but too much is too much. The multiverse premise, which drives much of the ultimate plot line, isn't developed enough to be believable as the foundation for the characters' motivation. I left feeling frustrated with what could have been.

Historia
They sent me into the blasted lands to die. I refused. I lived. And now...I return to the empire that discarded me. A god, rich with worship. I don't know what has become of Hasra, or the war with the Fomori. I don't know where Li is, or if her homeland is still dealing with the wyrm Khonsu. My sister and mother were freed—the reward for my blood price— but I have no idea what has become of them. It is time to go home. Time to right old wrongs, and to find the legacy left behind by my former incarnation. Three tombs remain. Once I am certain my family is safe I will seek them.

Disappointing - bad editing, no flow
Revisado: 01-16-23
Very disappointed. After books 1-3 I was really looking forward to this one. Book 4 reads like a storyboard with little soul or flow. Acquire new power or item; fight scene; lather, rinse repeat. Seems like he kind of mailed this one in and the editors (if there were any) should have sent this back for redraft.

Delightful - textured and enjoyable
Revisado: 02-17-18
What made the experience of listening to The Book of Lost Things the most enjoyable?
Good narrator, good story and pacing.
What other book might you compare The Book of Lost Things to and why?
Not quite like other books in its genre (fairy tale with adult twists). More textured - somehow blends seamlessly from standard fairy tale twist to hints of adult horror; offers emotional insights without having to reach for them.
Which scene was your favorite?
Wonderful ending(s).
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Fairly steady through the book, but unusually strong ending.

Truly outstanding - a top 10 read
Revisado: 11-07-16
What made the experience of listening to Nevernight the most enjoyable?
Good narrator; unique narrative style
What other book might you compare Nevernight to and why?
Name of the Wind, but with assassins
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. Absorbing, but may be better in segments, as the content and style can be rich.
Any additional comments?
Highly recommended. Book One of a trilogy (the others aren't out yet), but it wraps up enough - no need to wait.

Historia
Two decades after the devastating Elemental War, which nearly destroyed the cosmos, the new Confederation restored peace and profitable commerce among the peoples and worlds of the Spiral Arm. The ambitious, innovative Roamers went back to their traditional business of harvesting the vital stardrive fuel ekti from the clouds of gas giant planets, and the telepathic green priests of Theroc provided instantaneous galaxy-wide communication via their connection to the powerful and sentient worldtrees.

I hate to dissent, but just not up to his usual
Revisado: 10-28-16
What disappointed you about Eternity's Mind?
Repetitive and pedantic - assumes the reader can't remember anything. Little nuance.
Has Eternity's Mind turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I enjoyed the Saga of Seven Sons, and was hoping Book 3 would make the rest of the Saga of Shadows seem better in hindsight. Lots of action, but didn't get there for me.
What aspect of Mark Boyett’s performance would you have changed?
Have him read a different book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment and frustration.
Any additional comments?
This series is becoming formulaic, and not in a good way.
