A narrative experience
Revisado: 11-02-24
I’m going to be honest I picked up this book after seeing a single TikTok from the author because I love going in blind. Whether it is good or bad I have a fun time. And I was not expecting what I found. This book feels thoughtfully written. And while there are some points that feel like they could use a slightly stronger editor, I cannot complain because they are swept away into the larger narrative at hand. I found the pacing delightful, and enjoyed the drawn out nature of the relationships that develop. This work made me reflective of my own life and career as a woman in healthcare. Specifically the ways in which being a carer influences my relationships. I was not expecting a random TikTok find to be the source of great enjoyment and great personal reflection. This book has been a wonderful companion to knitting and drinking tea. I greatly look forward to the release of the 2nd audiobook.

A Nonstop Read
Revisado: 03-25-24
AK Mulford’s writing style hits every single box for me. Her writing feels plot driven while still maintaining the romance. This leads to a story with fast pacing you cannot set down. I adored her Five Crowns of Okrith series and while “wolf shifter” is outside of my normal reading selections I knew this book was worth a shot given how much I have enjoyed her other works. My expectations were surpassed as Mulford continues to write a diverse cast of characters who feel genuine and make you invested in their stories (you will not find heroines who are so tiny and lithe they ought to be pushed over by a strong breeze - a blessed reprieve in this fantasy genre). And while this book does contain some tropes they are presented in a way that makes you eat up the book rather than feeling cliche and predictable. I look forward to Mulford’s further works and to read the next story in the series.
