Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

Historia
T. E. Lawrence began his lifelong affair with the Middle East as a student at Oxford, taking a four-month walking tour of Syria to study the Crusaders' castles. He later returned to the area as an archaeologist and was attached to British Army Intelligence in Egypt at the outbreak of World War I. In 1916, he set out on his greatest adventure: with no backing, Lawrence joined Arab forces facing almost insurmountable odds in a rebellion against Turkish domination.

A lot of ego and concern about fame
Revisado: 07-25-22
What could have been a really good story seemed heavily burdened by a constant striving of the author to make Lawrence seem to be a celebrity.
( "He is the most interesting living Englishman." )
The fact that the author was personal friends with Lawrence creates too much bias.
Also the author's voice is condescending and somewhat nagging.

If you like to use your drive time for education by audiobook, consider this book for widening and deepening your view of an event you studied briefly in school - the Spanish conquest of the Americas. Conquistador Voices, which relies more heavily than most works of this kind on first-person accounts, neither glamorizes nor condemns the conquistadors. Somewhat in the manner of a modern film documentary, it treats the so-called conquest as an historical event that’s worth learning about for its own sake, with most of the moralizing left to the listener.

Story too bogged down
Revisado: 05-20-22
what could have been a good story is bogged down by superficisl twists and turns, very predictable, yet too ficticious to suspend disbelief.
the readers voice, though generally of high quality, shifts when reading royalty, and becomes unbearable.

In 1787, William Bligh, commander of the Bounty, sailed under Captain Cook on a voyage to Tahiti to collect plants of the breadfruit tree, with a view to acclimatizing the species to the West Indies. During their six-month stay on the island, his men became completely demoralized, and on the return voyage mutinied. Yet a resentful crew, coupled with ravaging storms and ruthless savages, proved to be merely stages leading up to the anxiety-charged ordeal to come.

First hand account of naval genius
Revisado: 11-16-21
Captain Bligh is a naval genius. Although portrayed as a villain in movies, his own account seems the mutiny seems balanced and highly professional. The first part is a bit dull, but the mutiny and open-boat journey is one of the greatest feats in naval history... almost 20 men packed in a jolly boat, over 3,000 miles through hostile tribal islands. Bligh's brilliant navigation and iron discipline saved his men.

It started off slow, but soon became engaging
Revisado: 10-22-21
This story started off slow, but I was very impressed with the straightforward authentic accounts. This is a good follow up to the journals of Lewis and Clark, as his journal entries explain what the next generation Discovered and knew in the 1830s.
