Historia
Ten years ago, sisters Olivia and Melanie Greene were on a backcountry hiking trip when their parents were in a fatal car accident. Over the years, they grew apart, each coping with the loss in her own way. Olivia plunged herself into law school, work, and a materialist view of the world - what you see is what you get, and that's all you get. Melanie dropped out of college and developed an online life-coaching business around her cafeteria-style spirituality - a little of this, a little of that, whatever makes you happy.

But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Captivating on every level!
Revisado: 11-27-22
One of the most delightful books I have listened to (I have over 800). The story was extremely well written and the reader has the most mellifluous voice and perfect intonation. I was surprised to find myself so engrossed in a story about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary and especially delighted to discover it was written based on real events, although fictionalized. The characters were beautifully captured in their passion and devotion, both to their work and to each other. Truly a wonderful selection.

Historia
How did Hawaii become part of America? This story, inspired by true events suppressed for nearly 100 years, is the one James Michener never wrote. In 1886, Laura Jennings travels to Hawaii to live with missionary relatives. She imagines she’ll live in a grass hut, ministering to uncivilized locals. When she arrives in Honolulu, she’s surprised to find her relatives are among the wealthy elite plotting to overthrow the Hawaiian monarchy. And the Hawaiians have developed a charming and prosperous Victorian kingdom.

Narrator was slow and plodding throughout entire book. Story was well written and important in context of today’s issues.
Revisado: 06-17-21
High school children Could be quite surprised to see the similarity in the 1800s and the duplicity by which
the Hawaiian islands were stolen from their peace loving native land owners by greedy, religious, or manipulative Americans who want to do it and for profit. It’s much too familiar with so much of what’s happening today, but a lesson that better be learned.

Historia
Emma London never thought she had anything in common with her grandmother Genevieve London. The regal old woman came from wealthy and bluest-blood New England stock, but that didn't protect her from life's cruelest blows. Genevieve rose from the ashes of grief and built a fashion empire that was respected the world over, even when it meant neglecting her other son. When Emma's own mother died, her father abandoned her on his mother's doorstep. Genevieve took Emma in and reluctantly raised her - until Emma got pregnant her senior year of high school.

poor reader

The main reader had an annoying style for me. A tremulous voice that often seemed melodramatic and false. Otherwise I would have rated all 5's.

Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

Extremely disappointing
Revisado: 04-11-20
I have enjoyed other tales of life in rural mountain regions and looked forward to this one. However, the reader adopted such an affected, intense Ozark dialect and twang that it grated on me the entire book. I kept skipping chapters, hoping to enjoy the story more if i listened less to the dialect, but it totally ruined the enjoyment for me.
The story concept, while engaging, was also disappointing. The characters relationships were thinly developed and for the multiple characters involved this was not terribly meaningful. However, there were a few relationships in this story which the dynamics could and should have been far more dynamically portrayed.
Overall this book was a great disappointment to me, especially having it highly recommended by someone who had read it in printed form. Maybe that made a difference here.

Historia
In this “rich, complex family saga” (USA Today) full of long-buried family secrets, Marilyn Connolly and David Sorenson fall in love in the 1970s, blithely ignorant of all that awaits them. By 2016, they have four radically different daughters, each in a state of unrest.

So you think you have problems?
Revisado: 03-19-20
in this apparently idealized family, all the adult "successful" children are miserable by varying degrees. But Mom and Dad are exceptionally happy with each other and still in love, so their children have all decided they can never meet the expectations of matching their love and are therefore doomed to their unfulfilling and fractured relationships. But the kids arent that crazy and life, as it does, has swayed each of them by events never planned for and circumstances never imagined. Like most normal human beings, they, as would we, struggle to figure out WTF to do next! The parents actually arent that perfect and somehow this family stumbles over and through their crazy persecutions of themselves and each other in a ways both poignant and humorous until they reach a fuller understanding and acceptance of who they are and what it means to really be a family. Altho I wasnt quite happy with this story at the beginning, it became much more engrossing as I got into it and I enjoyed it very much.
