Historia
This shattering drama of isolation and loss is one of the greatest tragedies in world literature. King Lear of Britain has three daughters: the hard-hearted Goneril and Regan, and the good and gentle Cordelia. He determines to divide his kingdom between them, giving the largest share to she who can say she loves him the best. Lear's tragic lack of judgment and self-knowledge is paralleled by the blindness of the loyal Gloucester who is persuaded to reject his virtuous son, Edgar, in favor of the villainous Edmund.

I'm not sure I need to say anything about the play. It's a classic. Complex, profound, and beautiful. I really like this production though. My go to audio version of the play.

Historia
Rumi's Spiritual Verses is the greatest mystical poem in Islamic culture - and of all time. Rumi examines our human separation from reality, love, and truth. He shows how love - neither erotic nor sentimental but divine, by which the universe is held together - enlightens ignorance and dissolves suffering. The first book of the Masnavi is the key to the whole work: It takes off from simple, amusing tales into realms unimaginable, but wholly familiar to the human heart.

Good performance of an abridged edition
Revisado: 10-22-22
The Masnavi e Masnavi is a very complicated work. The stories weave in and out of each other and are often riddled with commentary. This abridgement does a fairly good job of capturing the book but it is something that requires time and attention as the narrative often shifts unexpectedly. I hope you enjoy this listen.

A good adaptation and introduction to the Shahname
Revisado: 10-22-22
At first I found the story repetitive and the performance obnoxious. But gets quite interesting later on. This book covers the beginning of Shahnameh to the death of Rostam, excluding the historical section of the book. At times I did find that the performance got in the way of my enjoyment, but over time grew used to it. This is a good adaptation and introduction to the Shahnameh. if you're interested in a book that feels like a mixture between Genesis and Arthurian romances, then you like this book.

Great book, but only partial
Revisado: 10-14-22
This was a great listen. The performer reads well and story is great. The characters are all problematic, but are presented so that they are understood. In the last 2/3 or so of the novel we see how contemporary events effect the family. I enjoyed it, but the greatest crime of this audiobook is that it is only the first in a series of three. I wish I could listen to the rest of this family saga. There were many conflicts and much development throughout this novel, but there is much left unresolved and most of the book is what seems like exposition, introducing the family and their world.

Historia
The iconic love story of the Middle East, by a 12th-century Persian poet who has been compared to Shakespeare for his subtlety, inventiveness, and dramatic force, Layli and Majnun tells of star-crossed lovers whose union is tragically thwarted by their families and whose passion continues to ripple out across the centuries. Theirs is a love that lasts a lifetime, and in Nezami's immortal telling, erotic longing blends with spiritual self-denial in an allegory of Sufi aspiration, as the amenities of civilization give way to the elemental wilderness.

Historia
Considered by Rumi to be "the master" of Sufi mystic poetry, Attar is best known for this epic poem, a magnificent allegorical tale about the soul's search for meaning. He recounts the perilous journey of the world's birds to the faraway peaks of Mount Qaf in search of the mysterious Simorgh, their king. Attar's beguiling anecdotes and humor intermingle the sublime with the mundane, the spiritual with the worldly, while his poem models the soul's escape from the mind's rational embrace.

Great Work of Spirituality and Storytelling
Revisado: 09-30-22
"Wayfarer, do not come
to this book for fancy poetic tales:
see it through the eyes of suffering
to understand an iota of my longing.
Do that and you've scored the goal." (348)
This is a great book about the spiritual process of coming to and unifying with the divine. The stories are entertaining and yet the true meaning of this book (i.e. a true spiritual understanding) must approach it with patience and contemplation. I've only listen once and have much to learn, but it is plain to see how important this book can be, especially if you are religious. Would recommend.

Historia
Tokyo resident Keiko Furukara has never fit in - neither in her family, nor in school - but when at the age of 18 she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of national convenience store chain Smile Mart, she realizes instantly that she has found her purpose in life. Delighted to be able to exist in a place where the rules of social interaction are crystal clear (many are laid out line-by-line in the store's manual), Keiko does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and mode of speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a "normal" person excellently, more or less.

Good Book
Revisado: 09-28-22
I don't mean any harm with three stars, but there are so many good books out there that I couldn't bring myself to rate it higher. That said this is a very interesting book. If you've spent a lot of time in Japanese combini like I have then this book might be interesting to you. But, I don't think this is a book for everyone. The characters are quirky, irrational, and unusual, but for as short as the book is it does not get too annoying. I'm glad I listened to this, but I'm not sure I'll listen again.

This is one of those books that you will just love when you read it. It is beautiful, profound, while remaining intelligible and accessible to a general audience. The metafictional aspects and the ways in which Ogawa uses popular genres for literary purposes are two things that make this work truly exceptional. I would highly recommend this to everyone.

Grigori Aleksandrovich Pechorin is an enigma: arrogant, cocky, melancholic, brave, cynic, romantic, loner, socialite, soldier, free soul, and yet, victim of the world, he eludes definition and remains a mystery to those who know him. Just who is he? And what does he hope to achieve? Evolving from first person to third person, and then into a diary, A Hero of Our Time takes on a variety of forms to interrogate Pechorin's cryptic character and his unusual philosophy, providing breathtaking descriptions of the Caucasus along the way.

Hailed as a bold foray into new literary territory, Kawakami’s novel is told in the voice of a 14-year-old student subjected to relentless torment for having a lazy eye. Instead of resisting, the boy chooses to suffer in complete resignation. The only person who understands what he is going through is a female classmate who suffers similar treatment at the hands of her tormenters.

Very Good, but Triggering
Revisado: 09-28-22
You know, I really loved this book. I study Japanese literature and found a great deal of meaning behind it. Mixing philosophical issues with the trauma of bullying, the symbolism, and then just the sheer narrative technique were impressive to me. That said, this was hard for me to read. I'm on the fence about how good I think this book is because whereas it has brilliant aspects to it, as in other works by Kawakami it realizes a bit took much on shock and gut wrenching despair for me.
