Historia
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Run of the mill dirty cop story
Revisado: 07-08-24
While I enjoy Ed Harris as an actor, I felt this performance did little for the story. Part if that was because it's a typical story about an alcoholic cop who is dirty. I feel I've heard this story before. Anyway, there should be a trigger warning to readers about suicide.

Historia
Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

This Psych 312 assignment just might send me off the deep end. Determining whether love at first sight really exists with Robbie Moravian as my project partner of all people? He’s the sappiest man alive, so upbeat I could scream, and clearly rooting for happy endings at every turn. How does he not learn from experience considering our own meet-cute last semester almost got us expelled? But we both need to pass this course to graduate. So we’re interviewing five random couples about their meet-cutes and relationships and spending all this time together. Which is certainly...educational.

I actually really liked it
Revisado: 02-07-24
I thoughtvI was going to hate this meet-cute story about older college students who were studying love for an assignment, but I was really surprised how much I liked it. It's a feel good story that doesn't go over the top. The narrators were amazing, and the added sound effects were not distracting.

Great story, whistling narrator
Revisado: 01-25-24
I really like the story. Bought the series to read on my kindle & wanted to try listening to it, too. The narrator is ok, but probably not professionally trained. She has this habit of making whistling sounds when she says the word "she" (which she often says as "ch-eee"). It's a word that comes up a lot since the main characters is female. There are other "quirks" about this narration. I personally find them rather distracting so I will not be buying other titles with this narrator...but the story is pretty good so if things like that don't bother you, go for it.

One minute, down-and-out actor Lorenzo Smythe is, as usual, in a bar, drinking away his troubles while watching his career circle the drain. Then a space pilot buys him a drink, and the next thing Smythe knows, he’s shanghaied to Mars. Smythe suddenly finds himself agreeing to the most difficult role of his career: impersonating an important politician who has been kidnapped. Peace with the Martians is at stake, and failure to pull off the act could result in interplanetary war.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Flawed, but Interesting Speculative Sci-Fi
Revisado: 06-01-21
Project Hail Mary begins with a bang: Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a trip to save Earth's dying son. However, he wakes up and doesn't even know his own name. He doesn't know he's on a space ship, and he doesn't remember his mission. I pre-ordered this book because I loved the Martian, and I could see promise in Artemis (though it was not my favorite).
Many of the things that worked with The Martian are here, namely a solo science guy who could science his way out of problems. And, many of the things that didn't work with Artemis are here, namely a main character whose trajectory and development seems forced and untrue. Ryland Grace is someone who really doesn't like humanity, though. He lives alone, doesn't have many friends, seems to like his own company more than others, and seems like someone who doesn't take criticism well. He is a teacher, but one wonders how effective a person like Dr. Grace really would have been in real life. The author tells us he's a "cool teacher" but it doesn't really ring true. Dr. Grace believes that the greater "science community" forced him out of academia because he had theories about the foundation of life that was a little out of the mainstream. He's not really whiny...but he does lack resilience and inner fortitude. In real life, if someone had devoted much of their life to pursuing a scientific theory that was outside of the mainstream, he probably would have continued researching, writing papers and teaching at various universities (academic freedom would have mostly protected his tenured position). The scientific community is not a cabal that can force someone "out."
Even though Mr. Weir's character developments are not the best, they can be overlooked. This book is not a character study, after all. It is intensely plot-driven, and much of the plot relies upon speculative science: Materials that can be created by inert gases; single-celled life forms that travel through space; artificial gravity. The action is interesting, and the "what if" science questions make it a worthwhile listen.
The narrator does a great job with the various characters through the book. If you've listened to Mr. Porter narrate Dennis E. Taylor's Bobiverse books, you'll notice some of the same "voices" being used for other characters, here. Overall, despite some of the flaws, I really enjoyed this book and think that it was totally worth my Audible Credit

Lady O is Human after all
Revisado: 05-03-21
I was able to listen to this title because it was part of the Plus Catalog.
Where does this rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Honestly, I don't listen to many romance audiobooks. I'm not sure that this IS a romance novel, though, since there was no sex and very little romance.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I chose this one because I am familiar with Stephanie Lauren's work, and I have read many of the Cynster novels. I recognized the titular Lady Osbaldestone from that series. In this novel, she is not as gruff or all-knowing as she appears in those other works. Here, we have a more thoughtful and more humanized version of a great dame. It was nice that the author focused on a mature lady that was still interested in life. I'd say that this book is more of a character-driven novel rather than a romance-driven one.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Surprisingly, yes. While it was a little slow at the beginning, I really enjoyed the story as it went along. I wound-up listening to it over a weekend.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? Why?
Yes. Christmas novels have a special place within the romance world. This one, while having little "romance" focuses on the joys of the season and the sense of community that is important to celebrate the season. This may be a little too tame for some readers, especially those who have read the author's other works...but I found it to be a nice listen.
Any additional comments?
As for the story, I really enjoyed Lady O's interactions with the villagers and her grandchildren. The "mystery of the Christmas geese" was more funny than mysterious. And, of course, there was a predictable plot line that involved matchmaking.
As for the narrator, overall, I think that she did a good job. However, I disagree with how she pronounced some words, especially names. Yes, I know she is British (or is doing a British accent), but there is still a correct way to say certain names.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Derivative Story
Revisado: 04-01-20
Filled with all the cliched story lines you can imagine, this book is a military sci-fi yarn. The first half is pretty dry. The second half is action packed. If you have only one credit to get an audiobook--only use it on this one if you want mindless, predictable, potty mouthed sci-fi. Otherwise, save it!
Somehow, I kept expecting the series to get better, so after I got this title via Audible, I checked out the author's other books as ebooks from the public library. Amazingly, this is the best of the lot. The "AI" Skippy is reminiscent of Marvin from B.V. Larson's Star Force, but more childish.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend.
I will say, though, R.C. Bray does about as excellent of a job as you can expect. I have great respect for him as a narrator.

There is a rat in the Wolfe den
Revisado: 01-13-20
The last Wolfe novel written by Rex Stout may not be the best adventure, but it is a solid entry in the series.
The action starts when a waiter from Rusterman's shows up at the door, just when Archie is getting ready to go to sleep. Since the waiter won't talk to Archie, he is shown to the guest room where he can stay until Wolfe can see him the next morning. Unfortunately for all involved, a bomb kills the waiter and wreaks havoc upon everyone in the Brownstone. Soon, Archie, Saul, and the crew are investigating three interconnected murders, one of which may have something to do with Watergate. With guest appearances by Lon Cohen, Sgt. Stebbins, and Inspector Cramer, the novel seems like a farewell.
The plot is engaging, the dialogue is witty, and the action is a bit more complex than other cozies. Any Wolfe fan will enjoy the tale, Those new to the series may find some of the "insider secrets" a bit confusing.
Note: there is some dialogue from Archie that is even more misogynistic than other books in the series.
