Increasingly not for me
Revisado: 02-21-25
I'm having trouble finishing this. The setting swap from book two to this makes it feel like all settings are likely all just meaningless pit stops. The power creep makes it so the mc is sorta always in same spot, the stakes are roughly the same but people have fancier titles.. Finally the over arching narrative of the main bad guy just makes everyone else in existence seem stupid, there isn't enough to ground the multiverse setting for the stakes to matter beyond telling the reader it matters... Descriptions of transient items(creatures, places, attacks) feel like padding.
I think this series is just increasingly not for me. I would be willing to try a different series by the same author but the story feels like it it's going deeper and deeper into the aspects of this book I least enjoy.
If you enjoy the first two books you will probably enjoy this one. I was borderline after book two and it continued in a direction that I hoped it wouldn't. I think there are objective short comings but the story still has a lot of character and flavor that will likely overcome those issues if the story resonates with or interests you.

The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

Historia
When quiet Orrin and his extroverted best friend, Daniel, were transported to a strange RPG-based world, not much changed between them. Daniel became a hero of legend, while Orrin remained his unobtrusive shadow. Only when they faced a particularly lethal foe did Orrin step out of his comfort zone and display his true worth—with powers he didn't know he had. Of course, Daniel got all the glory, but Orrin doesn't mind. He's just happy they're both still alive.

Doofus ex machina
Revisado: 01-23-25
Pretty much every plot point is predicated in the main characters being the dumbest people alive. I get that they are teenagers but they constantly shout about their deadly secrets in front of all their enemies and make virtually the worst choices available to further the plot. There is nearly zero ambiguity for the motivations of the antagonists making them definitively the bad guys in comic book fashion. The world building has a lot of promise and I'll try the next one but I hope it pulls out of the YA harry potter (dumb kids fumble towards success) nosedive it seems headed for. There is a lot of potential here so it's really disappointing the story didn't add depth in book two, more stuff just happened.

The first wing of the Red Cathedral has been conquered, and the next phase of the Possibility King’s invasion is officially on. Strange towers have arrived all across EBO, bringing with them fragments of new and dangerous realities. Some will threaten the Onyx Delta, others will offer new opportunities, and one tower in particular will awaken something in Frank that really should have remained dormant.

Wasn't a big fan of the preview/sidestory, it was just a little one-joke/excessive when every 40 seconds it's just a jab at frank. I appreciate a back and forth and this was just shitting on a character for an hour straight. Was hoping for some turnabout or snark or something but it was just one guy getting berated and accepting it.

Ilea likes punching things. And eating. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many career options for hungry brawlers. Instead, the plan is to quit her crappy fast-food job, go to college, and become a fully functioning member of society. Essentially—a fate worse than death.

Becomes pointless
Revisado: 07-17-24
The first quarter or so is probably the most coherent story, after that everything accelerates at such an absurd rate that every 5 chapters render the last 5 meaningless. No struggle, no drama, no character development beyond the incessant level up text (probably 5%+ of the book is 'ding! x leveled up to level xxx'). MC has same response to every interaction. World building is interesting until the MC renders it meaningless by gaining 5-10 levels every chapter. I ordered the 2nd book after 6 hours into this one and regret it, hopefully it improves.

“IT’S SHOWTIME.” The news has made headlines-"Korea and Japan join hands to exterminate the terrifying magic beasts on Jeju Island once and for all!” It’s a monumental moment for the people of the country…and it has absolutely nothing to do with Jinwoo. Instead, the newest S-rank hunter’s number one priority is bringing his recently recovered mother back home where she belongs at last. When the situation on Jeju Island takes a devastating turn for the worse, though, will the country's top hunters be strong enough to save the day without him?

I kinda liked the world building and that was the only thing keeping me in the story. The MC is unlikable and in the next book uses his powers to spy on a woman in the shower because hes a poorly written mary sue and the author sucks ass at writing an actual human a reader could sympathize with. There are zero stakes because MC is always strong enough to settle things with zero effort. The story is bad and the characters are terrible. It doesn't get any better.
The performance is horrible and the guy keepa growling and screeching into the mic likes some asmr dinosaur erotica.

Historia
The eastern front is a place where soldiers never sleep and artillery guns howl without rest. This quagmire is where the Salamander Kampfgruppe has been hurled once again, just another cog in the grand war machine of their fatherland. Still, there's only so much one unit can do. As the fighting ramps up with renewed enemy attacks and a brand-new weapon that pitches the Federation's quantity against the Empire's quality, Tanya faces one of her toughest battles yet, making a certain visitor's arrival a sight for sore eyes.

The narrator was ill suited for this
Revisado: 10-16-23
The narrattion was great except for virtually all dialogue. most characters are male and were all given near identical voices and one of two female characters was also given that same voice that all males used. You can't just listen when there is dialogue you have to desperately pay attention to try and figure out who said what.
The title character's voice was fine in that it was distinct at least.
I've been blasting through this series but this installment has been a chore. I don't even blame the narrator, they were clearly just a poor choice by whoever decides that. Hire a second person to just do dialogue or something.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

I judged this book by its cover
Revisado: 03-17-23
This book popped up in my recommended list many times before I got it. The title and description seemed kinda lazy and I thought it would be some terrible anime isekai thing where the hero was OP and could fail at nothing. I was very very wrong. The book is fun and humorous and the narration is top notch. I bought book two after a few hours into this one and am going to start it right after finishing thia review. It doesn't take the craziest turns or rely on shock value. The story feels very structured and though I could more often than not have a good idea of where it was going that was only because the story made sense and the characters were acting within their established...well, character. Very enjoyable, I look forward to continuing the story.
I still think the name is terrible.

I got some enjoyment out of the book because I appreciate the world building but the characters... They feel like a rough draft. Like I was willing to buy into them at the start to see where their personal arcs were headed but they mostly just become less and less sympathetic the more you learn about their pasts and opinions.
The characters seemed pretty unprepared and lacking confidence for being citrine. They felt like 2nd year students until the author suddenly remembered they were supposed to be strong so they beat the monsters off screen real quick.
The gambling thing was centerpieced and felt unresolved. Like clearly she is a liability and has questionable judgement and basically is having withdrawals at times and the moral is she is the correct one and everyone should support her habit?
The story never showed WHY two characters have romantic feelings towards a third. Like it literally never showed a single scene to show deepening bonds with the romantic interest or positive aspects of her personality they admired or agreed with. So I guess she was just attractive?
Nieve is like a frat bro but a woman? Is that the idea?
Emiko's later chapters are like reading Ceresi POV chapters, their internal monologue just makes them so unbearable that I'm cheering against them.
There was a lot of telling me that the characters are powerful or admirable and little to zero showing of it.
I'll pick up the next in the series and hope future chatacters are more fleshed out.
